Summary
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2020-2021 530i xDrive, 540i xDrive and 2021 740Li xDrive vehicles. The output shafts (left/right) which transfer power from the driveshaft to the rear wheels may break due to a heat treatment error during supplier production.
Remedy
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the output shaft(s), free of charge. The recall began March 24, 2021. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Please perform the procedure outlined in this Service Information on all affected vehicles before customer delivery. In the event the customer has already taken delivery of the vehicle, please perform the procedure the next time the vehicle is in the shop.

SITUATION
BMW AG is conducting a Voluntary Safety Recall (effective January 28, 2021) on a small number of Model Year 2020-2021 BMW vehicles that were produced between March 13, 2020 and June 26, 2020.
The output shafts (left / right) which transfer power from the driveshaft to the rear wheels, may not have been produced to specifications. Over time, the shaft(s) could become damaged and break, affecting vehicle handling and control, and increase the risk of a crash.
CORRECTION
For G12 vehicles, the right rear output shaft must be replaced. For G30 vehicles, the left rear output shaft must be replaced.
PROCEDURE
Replace the rear output shaft according to repair instructions 33 21 000 Removing and installing/replacing left or right output shaft

BMW AG is conducting a Voluntary Safety Recall (effective January 28, 2021) on a small number of Model Year 2020-2021 BMW vehicles that were produced between March 13, 2020 and June 26, 2020.
Please be reminded that it is a violation of federal law (The Safety Act) for you to sell, lease or deliver any new motor vehicle covered by this notification until the recall repair has been performed. This means that centers may not legally deliver new motor vehicles to consumers until they are fixed or use/sell replacement equipment/parts subject to this recall. Note also that substantial civil penalties apply to violations of the Safety Act.
Also, you should not sell, lease or deliver any Certified Pre-Owned or used vehicles subject to a safety recall until the repair is completed.
Please follow any special instructions that we provide to you for the return or disposition of recall parts.

Q1. Which BMW Group models in the US are potentially affected by this Safety Recall? A small number of Model Year 2020-2021 BMW 5 Series and 7 Series in the US, produced between March and June 2020, are potentially affected.
Q2. What is the specific issue?
The output shafts (left / right) which transfer power from the driveshaft to the rear wheels, may not have been produced to specifications. Over time, the shaft(s) could become damaged and break, affecting vehicle handling and control, and increase the risk of a crash.
Q3. Why are other models / vehicles not included in this Safety Recall?
Other models have output shafts produced to specifications.
Q4. Can I continue to drive my vehicle?
Yes. However, when you receive a letter requesting you to make an appointment to have this Safety Recall performed by an authorized BMW center, please do so as soon as possible. If you are not the only driver of this vehicle, please advise all other drivers of this important information.
Q5. Can I determine if this issue exists in my vehicle?
No. However, if this issue occurs, carefully move away from traffic and pull over to a safe location as soon as possible. If it is safe to do so, all occupants should carefully exit the vehicle and move to a safe location away from traffic. Do not continue to drive the vehicle. Contact BMW Roadside Assistance at 1-800-332-4269 immediately to have your vehicle brought to the nearest authorized BMW center.

Reimbursement of Prior Customer-Pay Repairs (TREAD Act)
Based on the issue and the age of the Affected Vehicles being addressed by this Safety Recall Campaign, a
reimbursement request for a qualifying prior customer-pay repair is not likely.
However, if you receive a reimbursement request from a customer for a prior repair that may qualify, please
contact the Warranty department (include a legible copy of the invoice) through IDS by selecting Coverage,
Policy, Coding Questions and Mileage Corrections. The Warranty department will review and respond to

has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain Model Year 2020-2021
BMW 5 Series and Model Year 2021 BMW 7 Series models. Our records indicate that you are the owner of
a potentially affected vehicle.
Why are we contacting you?
We are pleased to inform you that we are ready to perform this recall. If you have not had this recall
performed, please contact your authorized BMW center immediately to schedule an appointment.

What could happen?
The output shafts (left / right) which transfer power from the driveshaft to the rear wheels may not have been
produced to specifications. Over time, the output shaft(s) could become damaged and break, which could
increase the risk of a crash. This could also allow the vehicle to roll when parked if the parking brake was
not used. Until you have this recall performed, please use the parking brake when exiting the vehicle.
If this issue occurs while driving, carefully move away from traffic and pull over to a safe location
as soon as possible. If it is safe to do so, all occupants should carefully exit the vehicle and move
to a safe location away from traffic. Do not continue to drive the vehicle. Contact BMW Roadside
Assistance at 1-800-332-4269 immediately to have your vehicle brought to the nearest authorized
BMW center.
If you are not the only driver of this vehicle, please advise all other drivers and passengers of this
important information.
What will BMW do?
The affected output shaft(s) will be replaced for free which could take several hours.
There may be some options to help overcome the inconvenience of bringing your vehicle in for service, if
