May 15, 2024 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 24V345000
Seat Belt System Malfunction/FMVSS 208
A seat belt warning light that does not alert occupants of an unbelted seat belt or an SRS system that deploys improperly can both increase the risk of injury in a crash.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V345
Manufacturer BMW
of North America, LLC
Components SEAT BELTS
Potential Number of Units Affected 3,256
Summary
BMW
of North America, LLC (BMW
) is recalling certain 2024 XM, 2025 BMW
X5 sDrive40i, X5 xDrive40i, X5 M60i, X5 M, X5 xDrive50e, X6 xDrive40i, X6 M60i, X6 M, X7 xDrive40i, X7 M60i, and Alpina
XB7 vehicles. The seat belt system may inaccurately detect that passengers are belted, preventing the seat belt warning light from illuminating and possibly causing the supplemental restraint system to not deploy as intended during a crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, “Occupant Crash Protection.”
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and replace the front seat lower seat belts as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed July 5, 2024. Owners may contact BMW
customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
Check if your BMW has a Recall
Chronology :
On April 15, 2024, during quality checks of the front seat safety belt system at the supplier, it was noticed that the system indicated a latched condition when the belt was not latched. Further checks were performed, and a parts analysis was initiated.
On April 20th, a similar result was noticed on a vehicle at the vehicle assembly plant. A stop ship was implemented, and an engineering investigation was initiated.
A review of the applicable regulations was conducted, with a focus on the safety belt warning system requirements and also crash condition performance requirements. Engineering release information and vehicle performance results pertaining to certification requirements were reviewed. The analysis suggested that the safety belt warning system may not function as required. Further analyses suggested that, depending upon seat occupancy, position, and possible other factors, supplemental restraint system performance may not meet certain requirements.
Vehicle assembly information and supplier production records were reviewed to determine the number and production dates of potentially affected vehicles.
On May 8, 2024, BMW
determined that potentially affected vehicles may not fully conform to FMVSS 208 Section 7.3, Section 14.5.2, and Section 15.2, and decided to conduct a voluntary non-compliance recall.
BMW
is not aware of any warranty claims, customer complaints, or field reports related to this issue. BMW
has not received any reports, nor is BMW
otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries related to this issue.

Recall 24V-xxx: Front Lower Safety Belt
The bulletin with the inspection process is now posted on TIS for vehicles affected by Recall 24Vxxx:
Front Lower Safety Belt (B52 03 24). This inspection may be performed on dealer owned
vehicles regardless of Remedy Status.
Due to system processing times, the “Remedy Available” Green Check may not display in ROSS
systems yet; this will update in the coming days.
If the vehicle passes the inspection, and an RDR override is necessary due to the system displaying
the Stop, you can enter the RO number and date the inspection was performed.
While we are anticipating a very low failure rate, if the vehicle fails the inspection, please follow steps
outlined in the Parts Information section of the Bulletin.
If vehicles have any other open Campaigns, they must be completed prior to delivery to the
customer.

SITUATION
BMW
AG has issued a Delivery Stop (effective May 7, 2024) on certain Model Year 2024 – 2025 BMW![]()
vehicles that were produced between April 5, 2024 and April 20, 2024.
As of May 14, 2024, this Delivery Stop has been upgraded to a Non-Compliance Recall.
A quality check showed that the sensor in the lower safety belt latch of the front seat(s) may be faulty.
The sensor system detects whether a safety belt is worn (belt buckle closed) and shows this via the display
in the instrument cluster.
In the event of an error, the safety belt is shown as worn even though it is not plugged in. This can affect
either the driver’s and/or passenger’s front safety belt latch.
CAUSE
Lower safety belt latch not manufactured as specified.
CORRECTION
Check that the sensor in the lower safety belt latch reads correctly.
If safety belt use is not properly displayed in the instrument cluster, then the lower safety belt latch is to be
replaced, one or both.
We anticipate a very low number of failures.
PROCEDURE
1-Test each front safety belt latch operation at least 15 times (Driver seat and passenger seat).
You can see the safety belt displayed at the bottom of the instrument cluster:

– Safety belt not plugged in “red indicator”.
– Safety belt plugged in “green indicator”.
There is a slight delay between belt connection and display in Instrument cluster, that is normal.
2-Here the image shows the drivers safety belt
latch is recognized as latched. This should only
occur when drivers’ safety belt is connected /
latched.
If the instrument cluster displays that the
driver’s seat is green when driver’s safety belt
is disconnected, then replace the driver’s safety
belt latch assembly as per repair instruction
REP 72 11 255 (lower belt front left).
3-Here the image shows the passengers safety
belt latch is recognized as latched. This should
only occur when passenger’s safety belt is
connected / latched.
If the instrument cluster displays that the
passenger’s seat is green when passenger’s
safety belt is disconnected, then replace the
passenger safety belt latch assembly as per
repair instruction REP 72 11 256 (lower belt
front right).
4-Here the image shows both front safety belts
as buckled.
If the function of both front safety belts is
properly displayed in the instrument cluster,
then everything is okay and technical action is
complete.
PARTS INFORMATION
We anticipate a very low number of failures.
If Remedy Status is green and you have a confirmed failure, please enter a Service TSARA Info Only Case
for review. Please have your Parts department enter a Recall IDS Ticket with the Case number for review.
The parts section will be updated when the parts arrive.

If vehicles have any other open Campaigns, they must be completed prior to delivery to the
customer.
Sincerely,
Technical Service

SITUATION

During supplier production, the hall sensor may not have been installed according to specifications. As a result, the sensor could indicate, erroneously, a belted condition instead of an actual unbelted condition. This could affect the logic of the safety belt warning system, and the functionality of the supplemental restraint system. Therefore, potentially affected vehicles may not fully conform to FMVSS 208 Section 7.3, Section 14.5.2, and Section 15.2. Description of the Safety Risk : If a driver and/or passenger was unbelted, the system could, erroneously,
recognize the driver and/or passenger as belted. If this occurred, then the safety belt warning lamp would not be illuminated in the instrument cluster. Also, in a crash, the supplemental restraint system may not perform as required and, therefore, provide an inappropriate supplemental restraint response, which could increase the risk of injury.

The analysis suggested The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Part 573 Safety Recall Report 24V-345
Page 5
The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573
that the safety belt warning system may not function as required.
Description of Remedy :
Description of Remedy Program : The front seat (driver and passenger) lower safety belt will be inspected
and, if necessary, replaced.
Owners will be notified by First Class mail and instructed to take their vehicle to an authorized BMW
dealer to have the remedy performed for free. If this condition were noticed on a potentially affected vehicle prior to this recall, the remedy would be covered by the BMW
New Vehicle Limited Warranty program. Therefore, reimbursement for a pre- notification remedy re Part 573.13 and Part 577.11 is not necessary.
