Description of the Defect : This safety recall involves the head air bag which may not have been produced by the supplier according to specifications. Over time, contamination within the inflator can lead to corrosion, which can result in a failure at the weld joint. In very rare cases, this could cause a separation of the two halves of the inflator at the joint. This could occur even in situations in which an ignition for an air bag deployment does not occur. Weld joint irregularities could also, over time, cause stored gas to leak from the inflator.

Description of the Safety Risk : A rapid inflator separation could result in injury or fatality to vehicle
occupants, and to persons who may be near the vehicle if this issue occurs. Over time, if gas leaked from the inflator, then in a crash, this could result in partial inflation of the head air bag and result in insufficient restraint to a vehicle occupant, which could increase the risk of injury.

On April 12, 2024, BMW received information from the head air bag supplier that another vehicle manufacturer had decided to perform a safety recall involving certain head air bags. The supplier also indicated that certain BMW vehicles may also have been equipped with parts produced from corresponding production lots. BMW reviewed the information provided by the supplier, and conducted its own engineering analysis. On April 17, 2024, out of an abundance of caution, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall.
BMW is not aware of any customer complaints, concerns, and/or instances, dealer field reports, or warranty claims that relate, or may relate, to the issue identified in this report. BMW has not received any reports, nor is BMW otherwise aware, of any incidents, accidents or injuries that relate, or may relate, to the issue identified in this report.
Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : The head air bags will be replaced.
Owners will be notified by First Class mail advising them of the recall and to schedule an appointment with an authorized BMW dealer to have the remedy performed for free. Although unlikely, owners who have had this remedy performed at their own expense prior to the recall notification, may be eligible for reimbursement according to BMW Group’s reimbursement plan in accordance with 49 CFR 573.13 and 49 CFR 577.11.
