Air Bag May Not Deploy Correctly
Instrument panel separation during air bag deployment can result in pieces of the panel striking occupants. Improper air bag deployment may not restrain an occupant as intended during a crash. Either of these scenarios can increase the risk of injury.

Summary
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2024 X5 sDrive40i, X5 xDrive40i and X7 xDrive40i vehicles. The instrument panel may not have been manufactured properly, which can result in improper air bag deployment or the panel separating during air bag deployment.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the instrument panel, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed April 16, 2024. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
Vehicles which require this campaign to be completed will show it as “Open” when checked either in AIR, AWP, Campaign Summary, or Warranty Vehicle Inquiry.
Please make sure you check your dealer inventory as soon as possible. You can see a list of affected vehicles in Inventory Campaign Details (ICD) under ROSS.
SITUATION
BMW AG is conducting a voluntary safety recall (effective February 9, 2024) on a certain model year 2024 BMW vehicles that were produced on January 29, 2024.
The dashboard in the affected vehicles may not have been manufactured to BMW specifications. In the event of an accident, the passenger side airbag may not deploy as intended which could increase the risk of injury to the front passenger.
CORRECTION
Replacement of the dashboard is necessary.
PROCEDURE
Replace the dashboard, following repair instructions listed in ISTA/AIR 51 45 031.

Chronology :
On January 27, 2024, during supplier production, an instrument panel was noticed in which the surface did not appear to meet quality standards. A second panel, with similar characteristics, was also noticed. A containment action at the supplier was implemented. An engineering investigation was initiated.
Reviews of the supplier production process were conducted. It was suggested that the resin composition used in the production of the panel be checked. Based upon results of ash testing, it was found that the panel’s resin mixture did not meet specifications during a specific production period. Further reviews, of supply chain logistics, and vehicle production / build configurations, were performed.
In early February, a vehicle stop ship at a vehicle assembly plant, and a corresponding dealer hold, were issued.
On February 15, 2024, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall.
BMW is not aware of any customer complaints, concerns, and/or instances, dealer field reports, or warranty claims that relate, or may relate, to the issue identified in this report.
BMW has not received any reports, nor is BMW otherwise aware, of any incidents, accidents or injuries that relate, or may relate, to the issue identified in this report.

BMW AG has issued a Delivery Stop (effective February 9, 2024) on a small number Model Year
2024 BMW vehicles that were produced on January 29, 2024.
As of February 20, 2024, this Delivery Stop has been upgraded to a Safety Recall.
Please be reminded that it is a violation of federal law (The Safety Act) for you to sell,
lease or deliver any new motor vehicle covered by this notification until the recall repair
has been performed. This means that Centers may not legally deliver new motor
vehicles to consumers until they are fixed or use/sell replacement equipment/parts
subject to this recall. Note also that substantial civil penalties apply to violations of the

Description of the Defect : The instrument panel may not have been produced by the supplier according to specifications. Specifically, the panel’s resin composition may not meet specifications. As a result, the passenger air bag module insert, which contains the passenger air bag module, may not be able to be properly attached to the underside of the instrument panel. In a crash in which air bag deployment occurs, deployment of the air bag could be impaired and/or pieces of the instrument panel could separate.

On January 27, 2024, during supplier production, an instrument panel was noticed in which the surface did not appear to meet quality standards. A second panel, with similar characteristics, was also noticed. A containment action at the supplier was implemented. An engineering investigation was initiated. Reviews of the supplier production process were conducted. It was suggested that the resin composition used in the production of the panel be checked. Based upon results of ash testing, it was found that the panel’s resin mixture did not meet specifications during a specific production period. Further reviews, of supply chain logistics, and vehicle production / build configurations, were performed. In early February, a vehicle stop ship at a vehicle assembly plant, and a corresponding dealer hold, were issued. On February 15, 2024, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall.
BMW is not aware of any customer complaints, concerns, and/or instances, dealer field reports, or warranty claims that relate, or may relate, to the issue identified in this report. BMW has not received any reports, nor is BMW otherwise aware, of any incidents, accidents or injuries that relate, or may relate, to the issue identified in this report. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : The instrument panel will be replaced.
Owners will be notified by First Class mail advising them of the recall and to schedule an appointment with an authorized BMW center to have the remedy performed for free. If this condition were to occur to a potentially affected vehicle prior to this recall, the remedy would be covered by the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty program. Therefore, reimbursement for a pre-notification remedy re Part 573.13 and Part 577.11 is not necessary.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

SITUATION
BMW AG is conducting a voluntary safety recall (effective February 9, 2024) on a certain model year 2024 BMW
vehicles that were produced on January 29, 2024.
The dashboard in the affected vehicles may not have been manufactured to BMW specifications. In the event of an
accident, the passenger side airbag may not deploy as intended which could increase the risk of injury to the front
passenger.
CORRECTION
Replacement of the dashboard is necessary.
PROCEDURE
Replace the dashboard, following repair instructions listed in ISTA/AIR 51 45 031.

Based on the issue and age of the Affected Vehicles being addressed by this Safety Recall Campaign, a
reimbursement request for a qualifying prior customer-pay repair is not likely.
However, if you should receive a reimbursement request from a customer for a repair that may qualify
because it addressed the issue described in this bulletin, and it was performed prior to the notification of
Recall, please contact the Warranty department (include a legible copy of the invoice) through IDS by

RE: Recall 24V-138: Dashboard – B51 05 24
BMW AG has issued a Delivery Stop (effective February 9, 2024) on a small number Model Year
2024 BMW vehicles that were produced on January 29, 2024.
As of February 20, 2024, this Delivery Stop has been upgraded to a Safety Recall.
Please be reminded that it is a violation of federal law (The Safety Act) for you to sell,
lease or deliver any new motor vehicle covered by this notification until the recall repair
has been performed. This means that Centers may not legally deliver new motor
vehicles to consumers until they are fixed or use/sell replacement equipment/parts
subject to this recall. Note also that substantial civil penalties apply to violations of the
Safety Act.
Also, you should not sell, lease or deliver any Certified Pre-Owned or used vehicles
subject to a safety recall until the repair is completed.
Please follow any special instructions that we provide to you for the return or disposition
of recall parts.

The instrument panel may not have been produced by the supplier to specifications. In a crash,
