Basis for recall population determination: Vehicle manufacturing information and supplier production records were reviewed to determine the number and production date range of potentially affected vehicles. Recall component difference to non-recall component: The windshield wiper system may not, in certain loading conditions, function as intended. Production Dates : OCT 13, 2022 – JAN 26, 2023 VIN Range 1 : Begin : NR End : NR Not sequential Description of Defect : Description of the Defect : The windshield wiper system may not, in certain loading conditions, function as intended. Due to a change by the supplier in the material property of the wiper lever, specifically the degree of hardness, the connection between the wiper lever and the knurled wiper motor axle could start to loosen and, over time, could stop working. As the connection loosens, a reduction in the amount of torque that is transferred from the wiper motor axle to the lever could occur. This could affect the ability of the wiper system to appropriately function during heavy loading conditions due to the increased resistance on, and an overload of, the system. Even if this occurred, the lever would remain attached to the wiper motor axle and, therefore, the wiper blades would not become a possible road hazard. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : In certain environmental and driving conditions, such as driving while heavy wet snow is precipitating, the wiper system may not function as intended. The wiper may cease to function, which would not allow the windshield to be appropriately cleared, affect driver visibility, and could increase the risk of a crash. Owners will be notified by First Class mail advising them of the recall and to schedule an appointment with an authorized BMW dealer to have the remedy performed for free. If this condition were to occur to a potentially affected vehicle prior to this recall, the remedy would be covered by the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty program. Therefore, reimbursement for a pre-notification remedy re Part 573.13 and Part 577.11 is not necessary. In the event of a failure, driving may no longer be possible. CAUSE The windshield wiper system may not have been produced according to specifications by the supplier. In rare cases, the system may not function as designed which could affect the ability of the wipers to appropriately clear the windshield. CORRECTION Inspect the batch code of the wiper console and replace if dates match the affected period. PROCEDURE Inspect the windscreen wiper system console following the instructions below. 1. Remove the cover of the engine compartment at the rear left (driver side). 2. Remove the driver side wiper arm following repair instructions “Removing and installing/replacing both windshield wiper arms 61 61 100 | REP-REP-P-6161100-G70 – V.1” (detach wiper arm with special tool 0 493 441 (61 6 060) when necessary.) 3. Raise the windshield panel cover on the driver’s side and record the wiper motor code. If the batch code falls under the affected dates (from 02 41 22 to 02 50 22), the wiper linkage must be replaced. Refer to AIR repair instructions 61 61 271 “Replace the console for the windshield wiper system” 6. If the windshield wiper console does not match the defective batch code dates, the wiper console is OK. Reinstall the removed parts in the reverse order of their removal.
