An engineering review was initiated. A review of Lot-Acceptance-Test (LAT) results indicated that on June 20th, a test anomaly had occurred during LAT knee air bag deployment whereby deployment did not occur as intended. A review of knee air bags from the same production lot as the suspect part were examined. It was suggested that additional deployment tests be performed with similar anomalies to determine knee air bag deployment performance. Tests were performed, and similar deviations in deployment were observed. Further reviews involving supplier production and process information were performed. It was determined that suspect parts may have been produced at a single station with a specific machine operator during a specific and limited period of time. Knee air bags from these production lots were identified. Vehicle assembly information and supplier production records were reviewed to determine the number and production dates of potentially affected vehicles. On June 30, 2023, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall. BMW has not received any reports, nor is BMW otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries that may be related to this issue. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : The knee air bag (driver and/or passenger) will be replaced. Owners are planned to be notified by First Class mail and instructed to take their vehicle to an authorized BMW dealer to have the remedy performed for free. If this condition was noticed on a potentially affected vehicle prior to this recall, the remedy would be covered by the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty program. BMW of North America’s Parts Technical Group will review the VIN and enter the order for the air bag(s) on behalf of the BMW center. When ordered this way, you will receive ONLY the air bag(s) needed for the specific vehicle. Each vehicle will require different modules replaced so this is the only way of ordering. The Parts Technical Group will reply to all Ticket requests with the part number(s) and backorder information if applicable. The part(s) must be installed in the VIN listed in the PO ONLY. An updated version of SI B65 19 23 will be published shortly Please do not re-open the IDS asking for an ETA and please do not enter an ETA IDS Ticket.
