Chronology :
On May 17, 2023, BMW
became aware of a possible issue involving the high voltage battery Combined Charging Unit (CCU) from the CCU supplier. An engineering investigation was initiated.
Discussions with the supplier occurred, as well as reviews of production process records. The supplier indicated that an internal validation check resulted in an Electro-Magnetic Compatibility (EMC) anomaly.
On May 29th, the supplier indicated that potentially suspect parts had passed end-of-line testing. However, it was unclear if these parts would perform without incident in a vehicle.
In June, further reviews indicated that the function of the completed CCU may be impaired due to incorrect rework of some parts by the supplier. It was suggested that this could lead to various CCU performance issues, including an interruption of electrical power while driving and result in stalling.
Vehicle assembly information and supplier production and process records were reviewed to determine the number, and production dates, of potentially affected vehicles.
On June 21, 2023, BMW
decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall.
BMW
has not received any reports, nor is BMW
otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries related to this issue.
