Certain components of the CCU may not have been appropriately connected and/or assembled. This could cause an interruption of electrical power while driving and result in stalling. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : If stalling occurred, this could increase the risk of a crash. Description of the Cause : NR Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : NR Involved Components : Component Name 1 : High Voltage Battery Combined Charging Unit (CCU) Component Description : High Voltage Battery Combined Charging Unit (CCU) Component Part Number : 61445A5CA28 Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : Panasonic Automotive Systems Europe GmbH Address : Robert Bosch Strasse 27-29 Langen Foreign States D-63225 Country : Germany Chronology : On May 17, 2023, BMW became aware of a possible issue involving the high voltage battery Combined Charging Unit (CCU) from the CCU supplier. An engineering investigation was initiated. Discussions with the supplier occurred, as well as reviews of production process records. The supplier indicated that an internal validation check resulted in an Electro-Magnetic Compatibility (EMC) anomaly. On May 29th, the supplier indicated that potentially suspect parts had passed end-of-line testing. In June, further reviews indicated that the function of the completed CCU may be impaired due to incorrect rework of some parts by the supplier. It was suggested that this could lead to various CCU performance issues, including an interruption of electrical power while driving and result in stalling. Vehicle assembly information and supplier production and process records were reviewed to determine the number, and production dates, of potentially affected vehicles. On June 21, 2023, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall. BMW has not received any reports, nor is BMW otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries related to this issue. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : The high voltage battery Combined Charging Unit (CCU) will be replaced. Owners will be notified by First Class mail advising them of the recall and to schedule an appointment with an authorized BMW dealer to have the remedy performed for free. If this condition were to occur to a potentially affected vehicle prior to this recall, the remedy would be covered by the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty program. Therefore, reimbursement for a pre-notification remedy re Part 573.13 and Part 577.11 is not necessary.
