Steering Rod May Detach from Wheel Knuckle
If the steering rod detaches from the steerable wheel knuckle, it can cause sudden loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary
ZF Group North America Operations (ZF) is recalling certain Lemförder Steering Center Rods sold as aftermarket parts for 1996-2004 BMW
5-Series (E39) vehicles. The steering center rods may have an insufficient ball pin pull force that may allow the rods to detach from the steering knuckle.
Remedy
ZF has notified the parts distributors, instructing them to inform the end customer. ZF will reimburse them for the affected parts. The recall began August 28, 2019.

Attention: Request for Return of Products – Lemförder Steering Central Rod for BMW E39
Dear Customer,
We refer to our letter dated 28 August 2019 in which ZF notified you of a safety recall of Lemförder steering central rods supplied to you and requested the immediate quarantine and return of potentially affected parts from you and your customers.
As of today, ZF has not received the return of all parts supplied to you.
ZF again requests that you immediately quarantine recalled parts in your possession and return to ZF. ZF further requests that you promptly inform your customers that may have received recalled parts to inform them of the recall, request the immediate quarantine of recalled parts and replacement of recalled parts installed in vehicles, and the return of those parts to ZF.
Affected steering central rods have the potential to detach due to an out of specification condition originating at the sub-supplier. If an affected part is installed in a vehicle and a detachment occurs, there is the potential that the steerability of the vehicle may be affected, increasing the risk of a collision.
As a reminder, steering central rods with part number LF: 15789 02, intended for use in BMW E39 (M5 / Alpina) built 03/96 – 12/03 vehicles may be affected.
Parts with production codes 0118 -1218 and 0119 – 0519 delivered from January 2018 are included in the recall. The date code and branding of the affected parts you will find on the bottom cap and on the housing as shown in the pictures below. Please examine this information carefully before to accurately identify parts included in the recall.
To return recalled parts, please use the established warranty process for reimbursement.
