SITUATION
BMW
AG has issued a Delivery Stop (effective March 31, 2023) on certain Model Year 2023 BMW
X1 SAV vehicles that were produced between August 2, 2022, and December 12, 2022.
As of April 7, 2023, this Delivery Stop has been upgraded to a Safety Recall.
In the rear seating row, the safety belt on the left and/or right side may have been pinched against an interior trim panel during vehicle production. This could affect the function of the safety belt and, in rare cases, could increase the risk of injury.
The Recall Notice and Q&A have been attached for further information.
The bulletin will be updated when additional information becomes available.
CAUSE
In the rear seating row, the safety belt on the left and/or right side may have been pinched against an interior C-pillar trim panel, at the bottom, during vehicle production.
CORRECTION
Check the outer rear safety belts (left and right, per areas circled) and rework them if necessary.
Chronology :
On December 22, 2022, during vehicle assembly, an interference between a second row outboard seat safety belt and a vehicle interior trim panel was noticed. A closer examination indicated that a small portion of the belt was pinched by the trim panel in the lower area of the panel near the location of the seat bottom.
Between January and February 2023, efforts were undertaken to understand why the issue may have occurred, and to investigate the possibility of a production process improvement. Various analyses were performed, including vehicle geometry, production system parameters, and production system image techniques.
In March, additional efforts involved engineering analyses including technical assessments. It was suggested that even if the trim panel was interfering with a minor portion of the belt, this might have an affect upon restraint capability. Further reviews were conducted involving images captured during vehicle assembly, and other production and assembly quality information.
Vehicle assembly information was reviewed to determine the number, and production dates, of potentially affected vehicles.
On April 5, 2023, BMW
decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall.
BMW
has not received any reports, nor is BMW
otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries related to this issue.

Country : NR Chronology :
On April 5, 2023, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall.
