Summary
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2022-2023 iX xDrive40, iX xDrive50, iX M60 and 2022-2023 X1 xDrive28i vehicles. The front driver’s air bag may have been manufactured incorrectly and may not deploy as intended during a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the driver’s air bag, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 14, 2023. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

SITUATION
BMW AG has issued a Delivery Stop (effective February 3, 2023) on certain Model Year 2022 โ 2023 BMW iX SAV vehicles that were produced between October 14, 2021 and February 1, 2023.
As of February 8, 2023, this delivery stop has been upgraded to a Safety Recall.
The driver air bag may not have been produced according to specifications by the supplier. In rare cases, the air bag may not deploy exactly as intended in a crash, which could increase the risk of injury.

CAUSE
The driver air bag (in the steering wheel) may not have been produced according to specifications by the supplier.
CORRECTION
Replace the driverโs air bag.
PROCEDURE
Note: Special tool usage and A-pillar paint finish protection instructions are included in the โMoving the hood to the service positionโ repair instruction. Follow repair instruction to install adhesive tape prior to moving the hood to the service position to avoid paint damage.
Important Warning for Working on the High-Voltage (HV) systems on BMW Group vehicles:
Only properly trained personnel, who passed all applicable HV Technical Training Courses, should perform repairs which require disconnecting, or removal of High Voltage battery components on any Hybrid or Electric Vehicle. Work performed on High Voltage systems by unqualified persons may result in severe injury or damage to the vehicle. Additional safety information is found in Repair Instruction 61 00โฆ โObserve safety instructions when handling electric vehiclesโ.
Prior to disconnecting, or the removal of any HV component, the HV system needs to be disabled and secured (by means of the HV Service Disconnect Switch and lock out) by a properly trained technician, who has a minimum HV Qualification level after completing the Technical Training Course โST2324 High Voltage Drivetrain Systemsโ which as of 1/2023* includes ST1824 Alternative Drive Part 1.
Once the vehicleโs HV system is disabled (the โBlitzโ – lightning bolt icon is displayed in instrument cluster, see below), a technician without HV Certification may remove a HV component (e.g., EH Heater, EKK Compressor, EME Control Unit, et.), except for the High Voltage Battery.
* Note: As of January 2023, the HV component portion of the โST2205 Generation 5 High-voltage classโ (except for the High Voltage Battery) has been merged into โST2324 High Voltage Drivetrain Systemsโ.
High Voltage Battery removal and rework can ONLY be performed by a High-voltage Certified Technician with a HV Battery Certification level corresponding to a specific Electric or Hybrid vehicle, for example:
To repair GEN4 HV battery of G05 PHEV a certification from Technical Training Course โST2006 โ SP44 HV Batteryโ or equivalent ST1825 โ Alternative Drive Part 2 is required (or as of 1/2023 the equivalent โST 2325 for High Voltage Battery Systemsโ).
And-
To repair A GEN5 HV battery the Technical Training Course โST2205 Generation 5 High-voltage classโ is required or as of 1/2023* the equivalent โST 2325 for High Voltage Battery Systemsโ.
*Note: As of January 2023, the โST2205 Generation 5 High-voltage stand-alone classโ has been merged into โST2324 for High Voltage Drivetrain Systemsโ and โST2325 for High Voltage Battery Systemsโ

Chronology :
In January 2023, during an engineering development test of a new vehicle model, an atypical driver air bag deployment appeared to have occurred. An engineering review was initiated.
A review of test results indicated that, although the FMVSS 208 requirements were met, nevertheless the air bag deployed in an unusual manner. Other test results including full vehicle, sled, and system-level test information were reviewed. During the review, it was suggested that other vehicle types in production may use the same driver air bag supplier, and the same air bag module design, and were therefore identified for analyses. Engineering development and test information for these other vehicle types was obtained and analyzed, as well as Conformity of Production (COP) test results, including information from the air bag supplier.
Additional analyses found that, in rare cases during air bag module assembly at the supplier, a production process anomaly could occur involving a rebound tether strap. It was suggested that, if this were to occur, it could affect the deployment trajectory and resulting performance deviation, as observed in the January test.
Vehicle assembly information and supplier production records were reviewed to determine the number and production dates of potentially affected vehicles.
On February 7, 2023, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall.
BMW has not received any reports, nor is BMW otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries that may be related to this issue.

SITUATION
BMW AG has issued a Delivery Stop (effective February 3, 2023) on certain Model Year 2022 โ 2023 BMW
iX SAV vehicles that were produced between October 14, 2021 and February 1, 2023.
As of February 8, 2023, this delivery stop has been upgraded to a Safety Recall.
The driver air bag may not have been produced according to specifications by the supplier. In rare cases,
the air bag may not deploy exactly as intended in a crash, which could increase the risk of injury.
The Recall Notice and Q&A have been attached for further information.
CAUSE
The driver air bag (in the steering wheel) may not have been produced according to specifications by the
supplier.
CORRECTION
Replace the driverโs air bag.
PROCEDURE
Note: Special tool usage and A-pillar paint finish protection instructions are included in the โMoving the hood
to the service positionโ repair instruction. Follow repair instruction to install adhesive tape prior to
moving the hood to the service position to avoid paint damage.
Important Warning for Working on the High-Voltage (HV) systems on BMW Group vehicles:
Only properly trained personnel, who passed all applicable HV Technical Training Courses, should
perform repairs which require disconnecting, or removal of High Voltage battery components on any
Hybrid or Electric Vehicle. Work performed on High Voltage systems by unqualified persons may

result in severe injury or damage to the vehicle. Additional safety information is found in Repair
Instruction 61 00โฆ โObserve safety instructions when handling electric vehiclesโ.
Prior to disconnecting, or the removal of any HV component, the HV system needs to be disabled
and secured (by means of the HV Service Disconnect Switch and lock out) by a properly trained
technician, who has a minimum HV Qualification level after completing the Technical Training
Course โST2324 High Voltage Drivetrain Systemsโ which as of 1/2023* includes ST1824 Alternative
Drive Part 1.
Once the vehicleโs HV system is disabled (the โBlitzโ – lightning bolt icon is displayed in instrument
cluster, see below), a technician without HV Certification may remove a HV component (e.g., EH
Heater, EKK Compressor, EME Control Unit, et.), except for the High Voltage Battery.
* Note: As of January 2023, the HV component portion of the โST2205 Generation 5 High-voltage
classโ (except for the High Voltage Battery) has been merged into โST2324 High Voltage Drivetrain
Systemsโ.
High Voltage Battery removal and rework can ONLY be performed by a High-voltage Certified
Technician with a HV Battery Certification level corresponding to a specific Electric or Hybrid
vehicle, for example:
To repair GEN4 HV battery of G05 PHEV a certification from Technical Training Course โST2006 โ
SP44 HV Batteryโ or equivalent ST1825 โ Alternative Drive Part 2 is required (or as of 1/2023 the
equivalent โST 2325 for High Voltage Battery Systemsโ).
And-
To repair A GEN5 HV battery the Technical Training Course โST2205 Generation 5 High-voltage
classโ is required or as of 1/2023* the equivalent โST 2325 for High Voltage Battery Systemsโ.
*Note: As of January 2023, the โST2205 Generation 5 High-voltage stand-alone classโ has been
merged into โST2324 for High Voltage Drivetrain Systemsโ and โST2325 for High Voltage Battery
Systemsโ

Based on the issue and the age of the Affected Vehicles being addressed by this Safety Recall Campaign, a
reimbursement request for a qualifying prior customer-pay repair is not likely.

BMW AG has issued a Delivery Stop (effective February 3, 2023) on certain Model Year 2022 – 2023
BMW X1 SAV and iX SAV vehicles that were produced between October 14, 2021 and February 1,
2023.
As of February 8, 2023, this delivery stop has been upgraded to a Safety Recall.
The driver air bag may not have been produced according to specifications by the supplier. In rare
cases, the air bag may not deploy exactly as intended in a crash, which could increase the risk of
injury.

In January 2023, during an engineering development test of a new vehicle model, an atypical driver air bag deployment appeared to have occurred. An engineering review was initiated. A review of test results indicated that, although the FMVSS 208 requirements were met, nevertheless the air bag deployed in an unusual manner. Other test results including full vehicle, sled, and system-level test information were reviewed. During the review, it was suggested that other vehicle types in production may use the same driver air bag supplier, and the same air bag module design, and were therefore identified for analyses. Engineering development and test information for these other vehicle types was obtained and analyzed, as well as Conformity of Production (COP) test results, including information from the air bag supplier. Additional analyses found that, in rare cases during air bag module assembly at the supplier, a production process anomaly could occur involving a rebound tether strap. It was suggested that, if this were to occur, it could affect the deployment trajectory and resulting performance deviation, as observed in the January test. Vehicle assembly information and supplier production records were reviewed to determine the number and production dates of potentially affected vehicles. On February 7, 2023, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall. BMW has not received any reports, nor is BMW otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries that may be related to this issue. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : The driver air bag will be replaced.
Owners are planned to be notified by First Class mail and instructed to take their vehicle to an authorized BMW dealer to have the remedy performed for free. If this condition was noticed on a potentially affected vehicle prior to this recall, the remedy would be covered by the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty program. Therefore, reimbursement for a pre- notification remedy re Part 573.13 and Part 577.11 is not necessary.
