) is recalling certain 2023 760i xDrive and i7 xDrive60 vehicles equipped with the Executive Lounge Seating Package. In certain seat monitoring conditions, the front passenger seat electronic control unit (ECU) software may not recognize the seat position, and disable the front passenger air bag, knee air bag, and active headrest.
Remedy
Dealers will reprogram the front passenger seat electronic control unit software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 10, 2023. Owners may contact BMW
customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
Vehicles which require this campaign to be completed will show it as โOpenโ when checked either in AIR, AWP, Campaign Summary or Warranty Vehicle Inquiry.

SITUATION
BMW
AG has issued a Delivery Stop (effective January 26, 2023) on certain Model Year 2023 BMW
7 Series and i7 vehicles that were produced between July 4, 2022 and January 24, 2023.
As of January 27, 2023, this delivery stop has been upgraded to a Safety Recall. This bulletin replaces Delivery Stop bulletin B52 02 23.
In rare circumstances in which the front passenger seat may be moved to a fully forward position, and then subsequently repositioned, a software issue may not appropriately record the seating position. As a result, the front passenger air bag, knee air bag, and active headrest may not deploy in a crash, which could increase the risk of injury.
The remedy will be a software fix with estimated availability during February.
The Recall Notice and Q&A have been attached for further information.
Do not deliver to a customer, a New, Certified Pre-Owned or Used vehicle subject to a Delivery Stop, until the vehicle is repaired. Do not use or sell replacement equipment/parts subject to a Delivery Stop.
CAUSE
Unfavorable software settings in the Air Bag Module (ACSM).
CORRECTION
Update the software in the ACSM.
PROCEDURE
- Determine the vehicleโs current I-level by either using AIR or the ISPA NEXT/AWP (Aftersales Workplace) applications. If needed, use the latest ISTA to work through test modules.
- Is the current vehicle integration level:
YES: Proceed to Step 3
NO: No further action necessary
- Program the vehicle using ISTA 4.39.36 or higher (released February 8, 2023).
Note that ISTA will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software.
Depending on the rework list, carry out a vehicle test and delete the fault memory, if required.
Always connect a BMW
-approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10).

Chronology :
On November 2, 2022, during a quality check at a vehicle assembly plant, it was noticed that a BMW
735i (EU/ECE version) displayed an air bag system warning message. At that time, it was unclear as to why the message was being displayed. An engineering review was initiated.
Vehicle systems information was examined in an attempt to identify if similar vehicle diagnostic information was present in similar conditions. This review identified four vehicles containing diagnostic information in which the air bag warning messages had been displayed.
On November 17th, during an internal quality check, a BMW
i7 (UN/ECE version) experienced a similar condition.
Between December 2022 and January 2023, further analyses, including a review of vehicle electronic control unit (ECU) monitoring / diagnostic software and lab and road tests, were conducted. A review of vehicle assembly information, production system records, and vehicle build configuration specifications, including software coding levels was performed, in order to determine specific vehicle models and/or option packages that could potentially be affected.
It was finally determined that, due to a software coding issue of the seat position ECU, certain ECU seat position monitoring routines could inadvertently not recognize the seat position and communicate an invalid seat position to the air bag and restraint system ECU, which would appropriately set a failsafe mode.
Vehicle assembly information and supplier production records were reviewed to determine the number and production dates of potentially affected vehicles.
On January 27, 2023, BMW
decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall.
BMW
has not received any reports, nor is BMW
otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries that may be related to this issue.

If one or more control modules fail during the reprogramming procedure, claim the required consequential repair work procedures to address this issue (including performing the IRAP Control Unit Recovery first as required, refer to the SIB in AIR) under the Defect Code in this bulletin with the labor operations in AIR that apply. Please explain the additional work procedures that were performed (The why and the what) on the repair order and in the claim comments. For covered repairs that address control module failures that occurred prior to performing this reprogramming procedure, claim this work with the Defect Code and labor operations (including the diagnosis that applies*) in AIR that apply. *Based on which one applies to your center, please refer to SI B01 01 20 or B01 07 20 for the applicable procedure for documenting, claiming, and explaining, on the RO and in the claim comments, your diagnosis work time (WT), job/repair work time (WT), and the vehicle repairs your center performed, unless otherwise required by State law. Reimbursement of Prior Customer-Pay Repairs (TREAD Act) Based on the issue and the age of the Affected Vehicles being addressed by this Safety Recall Campaign, a reimbursement request for a qualifying prior customer-pay repair is not likely. Description of the Defect : This safety recall involves the front passenger seat electronic control unit (ECU) software for vehicles equipped with the Executive Lounge Seating Package. Due to a software issue within the seatโs ECU, in certain seat monitoring conditions, the ECU may not recognize the seat position. If this occurs, an invalid seat position condition is communicated to the air bag and restraint system ECU, a failsafe mode will be set, and appropriate warning messages will be communicated to vehicle occupants. In the failsafe mode, the front passenger air bag, knee air bag, and active headrest will not deploy in a crash when warranted.

On November 2, 2022, during a quality check at a vehicle assembly plant, it was noticed that a BMW 735i (EU/ ECE version) displayed an air bag system warning message. At that time, it was unclear as to why the message was being displayed. An engineering review was initiated. Vehicle systems information was examined in an attempt to identify if similar vehicle diagnostic information was present in similar conditions. This review identified four vehicles containing diagnostic information in which the air bag warning messages had been displayed. On November 17th, during an internal quality check, a BMW i7 (UN/ECE version) experienced a similar condition. Between December 2022 and January 2023, further analyses, including a review of vehicle electronic control unit (ECU) monitoring / diagnostic software and lab and road tests, were conducted. A review of vehicle assembly information, production system records, and vehicle build configuration specifications, including software coding levels was performed, in order to determine specific vehicle models and/or option packages that could potentially be affected. It was finally determined that, due to a software coding issue of the seat position ECU, certain ECU seat position monitoring routines could inadvertently not recognize the seat position and communicate an invalid seat position to the air bag and restraint system ECU, which would appropriately set a failsafe mode. Vehicle assembly information and supplier production records were reviewed to determine the number and production dates of potentially affected vehicles. On January 27, 2023, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall. Owners are planned to be notified by First Class mail and instructed to take their vehicle to an authorized BMW dealer to have the remedy performed for free. If this condition was noticed on a potentially affected vehicle prior to this recall, the remedy would be covered by the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty program.
