Vehicles which require this campaign to be completed will show it as “Open” when checked either in AIR, AWP, Campaign Summary or Warranty Vehicle Inquiry. Please make sure you check your dealer inventory as soon as possible. A list of affected vehicles can be seen in Inventory Campaign Details (ICD) under ROSS. SITUATION
BMW AG is conducting a Voluntary Safety Recall (effective January 26, 2023) on certain Model Year 2023 BMW 2 Series Coupe and M2 models that were produced between October 24, 2022 and January 17, 2023. The side air bag cover panel on the rear seats may not have been produced to specifications by the supplier. In certain crashes where side air bag deployment is warranted, the cover panel may crack. If this happens, then the side air bag may not deploy as intended, which could increase the risk of injury.

Supplier backrest side panel material does not meet design criteria.

Replace backrest side panels (left and right) in accordance with repair instructions 52 26 008 (backrest side panel at the rear seat back). Unclip and remove the backrest section (1) on the rear seat backrest from the clamp (2). Check the clamp (1) for damage. A replacement clamp should be present on the new part. Repeat for opposite side of vehicle. PARTS INFORMATION

7 FRU (G42) Only one of the flat rate labor operation codes listed above can be used for claim submission and reimbursement. Also, only one Main work flat rate labor operation code can be claimed per workshop visit. Claim Repair Comments Only reference the SIB number and the work package (Pkg) number performed in the RO technician notes and the claim comments (for example: B52 01 23 WP 1), unless otherwise required by State law. Reimbursement of Prior Customer-Pay Repairs (TREAD Act) Based on the issue and the age of the Affected Vehicles being addressed by this Safety Recall Campaign, a reimbursement request for a qualifying prior customer-pay repair is not likely. However, if you do receive a reimbursement request from a customer for a prior repair that may qualify, please contact the Warranty department (include a legible copy of the invoice) through IDS by selecting Coverage, Policy, Coding Questions and Mileage Corrections. Replace the rear seat backrest side panels (left and right; circled) in accordance with repair instructions 52 26 008 (backrest side panel at the rear seat back). Unclip and remove the backrest side panel section (1) on the rear seat backrest from the clamp (2). Check the clamp (2) for damage. A replacement clamp should be present on the new part. Repeat for opposite side of vehicle. The serial number of the removed air bag AND the new air bag must both be stated on the repair order and in the comments section of the warranty claim. RE: Recall 23V-039: Side Air Bag Cover (Rear Seats) – B52 01 23 BMW AG is conducting a Voluntary Safety Recall (effective January 26, 2023) on certain Model Year 2023 BMW 2 Series Coupe and M2 models that were produced between October 24, 2022 and January 17, 2023.
Please be reminded that it is a violation of federal law (The Safety Act) for you to sell, lease or deliver any new motor vehicle covered by this notification until the recall repair has been performed. This means that Centers may not legally deliver new motor vehicles to consumers until they are fixed or use/sell replacement equipment/parts subject to this recall. Note also that substantial civil penalties apply to violations of the Safety Act. Also, you should not sell, lease or deliver any Certified Pre-Owned or used vehicles subject to a safety recall until the repair is completed. On January 17, 2023, BMW was informed by the supplier of a potential issue involving deployment of the second row seat side air bag. An engineering review was initiated. A review of Conformity of Production (COP) tests indicated that on December 21, 2022, a test anomaly had occurred during COP side air bag deployment. The plastic cover panel ( mounted on the seat backrest), cracked during deployment. It was suggested that side air bag deployment trajectory could be affected. Further reviews of COP test results and other information, as well as additional testing and lab analyses, were performed. Reviews of COP test results for production lots prior, and subsequent, to the suspect production lot, indicated that other production lots were not affected. An analysis of the plastic cover material, including infrared spectroscopy, indicated that the plastic cover material was not produced in accordance with specifications.

satisfactory. These analyses confirmed that the suspect parts had been produced during a single production lot by the supplier. Vehicle assembly information and supplier production records were reviewed to determine the number and production dates of potentially affected vehicles. On January 25, 2023, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall. BMW has not received any reports, nor is BMW otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries that may be related to this issue.
Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : The rear seat backrest side air bag cover panels will be replaced.
Owners are planned to be notified by First Class mail and instructed to take their vehicle to an authorized BMW dealer to have the remedy performed for free. If this condition was noticed on a potentially affected vehicle prior to this recall, the remedy would be covered by the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty program. Therefore, reimbursement for a pre- notification remedy re Part 573.13 and Part 577.11 is not necessary.
