An electrical shock or a fire can increase the risk of injury or death.
Summary
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2018 BMW 330e iPerformance, i3 Rex, i3 Sport Rex, X5 xDrive40e, i3 BEV, i3 Sport BEV and MINI Cooper Countryman SE All4 PHEV vehicles, 2019 i8 and i8 Roadster vehicles and 2018-2019 530e iPerformance, 530e xDrive iPerformance and 740Le xDrive iPerformance vehicles. Capacitors within the TurboCord Portable Chargers may fail, possibly resulting in a shock hazard or a fire.
Remedy
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the charging cable, and replace it if necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin November 12, 2018. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or Mini customer service at 1-866-825-1525.

RECALL 18V-XXX: CHECK BMW TURBOCORD PORTABLE EV CHARGER
Please perform the procedure outlined in this Service Information on all affected vehicles before customer delivery. In the event the customer has already taken delivery of the vehicle, please perform the procedure the next time the vehicle is in the shop.

SITUATION
BMW Group is conducting a Voluntary Safety Recall (effective September 26, 2018) on certain BMW TurboCord chargers which can be used with Model Year 2016-2019 BMW Plug-In Hybrid-Electric vehicles produced from 07/13/2015 to 08/20/2018.
Approximately 2,593 vehicles are affected by this recall.
Affected vehicles show the campaign as “Open” when checked either in Warranty Vehicle Inquiry, AIR or ISPA Next and identified with the description: 0061840400 B611218 Recall: Check TurboCord Portable EV Charger. All of the other systems including DAR and the RDR system will show the Stop Sale Sign starting tomorrow. Please utilize the Inventory Campaign Details under ROSS which shows all vehicles that have a Stop Sale in your inventory.
CAUSE
Affected cables were not produced to specifications due to one or more incompatible capacitors on the printed circuit board assembly. An affected cable could overheat and lead to a thermal event or present a shock hazard to the user.
CORRECTION
Inspect the serial number printed on the TurboCord Charger label, either on the charger body 110/240V wall plug, or on the shipping box. Enter the serial number into the “Serial Number Check” attachment, and find out if it is affected by this Recall.
Replace the TurboCord Charger with the improved part, if the serial number matches one of the affected serial number ranges.
In the interim, until the improved TurboCorde Charges are available, use the attached “Dealer Process” chart to address vehicles in your inventory.
The defective TurboCord Charger should be returned to the BMW WPRC Parts Return Center, via a normal parts return process.

BMW Group is conducting a Voluntary Safety Recall (effective September 26, 2018) on certain BMW TurboCord chargers which can be used with Model Year 2016-2019 BMW Plug-In HybridElectric vehicles produced from 07/13/2015 to 08/20/2018.

Please be reminded that it is a violation of federal law (The Safety Act) for you to sell, lease or deliver any new motor vehicle covered by this notification until the recall repair has been performed. This means that centers may not legally deliver new motor vehicles to consumers until they are fixed or use/sell replacement equipment/parts subject to this recall. Note also that substantial civil penalties apply to violations of the Safety Act.
Also, you should not sell, lease or deliver any Certified Pre-Owned or used vehicles subject to a safety recall until the repair is completed.

Note:
This ***Accessory-Based*** Safety Recall involves the BMW / MINI TurboCord Portable Charger (“charging cable”) produced by supplier Webasto Charging Systems, Inc. It is a “Level 2” charger, i.e., it is capable of connecting the vehicle with a 240Volt electrical outlet for “fast” charging of an Electric / Plug-In Hybrid-Electric vehicle. It is not the “Level 1” Occasional Use Cable (OUC) which connects the vehicle to a standard 120Volt electric outlet.
The charger is available for BMW / MINI customers as an accessory (port-installed, dealer, online).
Please refer to www.bmwcharging.com / www.minicharging.com for further information.
Owners may have purchased a non-BMW-branded / non-MINI-branded affected cable via other sales channels / third-party providers. The supplier did not provide BMW Group with any identifying information for those charging cables and, therefore, BMW Group cannot support the Safety Recall for those non-branded charging cables.

September 25, 2018
BMW /MINI recently discovered that the TurboCord Portable Charger (“Level 2 charging cable” or “charging cable”) that you purchased was not produced to specifications by the supplier and presents a safety risk. Accordingly, we have provide notice of this issue to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Furthermore, as required, we will need to replace your charging cable with a new one that is not affected by this issue.
Our supplier has not yet been able to produce a sufficient quantity of new cables and, for this reason, we cannot yet provide you with a new charging cable. We sincerely apologize for this temporary inconvenience.
When a sufficient quantity of new parts are available, we will notify you to return to your authorized BMW center / MINI dealer so that we are able to provide you with the new charging cable.
