Summary
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2024 2 Series Coupe (230i), 330i, X3 sDrive30i, X3 xDrive30i, X3 M40i, and X4 xDrive30i, X4 M40i vehicles. The steering gear may not have been tightened properly, which can allow it to loosen.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the steering gear, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed January 8, 2024. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

SITUATION
BMW AG is conducting a Voluntary Safety Recall (effective November 10, 2023) on certain Model Year 2024 BMW vehicles that were produced between August 17, 2023, and October 17, 2023.
The steering gear may not have been produced according to specifications by the supplier, potentially resulting in improperly installed screws.
The Recall Notice and Q&A have been attached for further information.

Chronology :
On October 17, 2023, during a road test of a Model Year 2024 BMW 330i Sedan at a vehicle assembly plant, unusual noise was noticed. It was initially suggested that the noise might be emanating from the area of the steering gear. An engineering review was initiated.
An examination of the vehicle indicated that the bolts connecting the servo unit to the housing rack of the steering gear were not seated properly. The steering gear supplier was contacted, and a containment action was implemented. A stop ship was issued at the vehicle assembly plant.
A review of supplier production and process records identified a change in the process joining the servo unit to the housing rack. Further reviews indicated that this change could lead to an improper connection between the servo unit and the housing rack, whereby suspect steering gears may not have been produced to specifications.
The engineering review suggested that, over time, if bolts became loose, this could affect functionality of the steering gear, and therefore potentially affect vehicle handling and control.
Vehicle assembly information and supplier production and process records were reviewed to determine the number, and production dates, of potentially affected vehicles.
On November 9, 2023, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall.
BMW has not received any reports, nor is BMW otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries related to this issue.

BMW AG is conducting a Voluntary Safety Recall (effective November 10, 2023) on certain
Model Year 2024 BMW vehicles that were produced between August 17, 2023, and October 17,

Please be reminded that it is a violation of federal law (The Safety Act) for you to sell,
lease or deliver any new motor vehicle covered by this notification until the recall repair
has been performed. This means that Centers may not legally deliver new motor
vehicles to consumers until they are fixed or use/sell replacement equipment/parts
subject to this recall. Note also that substantial civil penalties apply to violations of the
Safety Act.

Description of Defect :
Description of the Defect : The steering gear may not have been produced to specifications by the
supplier. Specifically, one or more of the bolts connecting the servo unit to the
housing rack may not have been fastened according to specifications. As a
result, one or more of the bolts could loosen, which could affect the connection
between the servo unit and the housing rack.

Chronology :
On October 17, 2023, during a road test of a Model Year 2024 BMW 330i Sedan at a vehicle assembly plant,
unusual noise was noticed. It was initially suggested that the noise might be emanating from the area of the
steering gear. An engineering review was initiated.
An examination of the vehicle indicated that the bolts connecting the servo unit to the housing rack of the
steering gear were not seated properly. The steering gear supplier was contacted, and a containment action
was implemented. A stop ship was issued at the vehicle assembly plant.
A review of supplier production and process records identified a change in the process joining the servo unit to
the housing rack. Further reviews indicated that this change could lead to an improper connection between
the servo unit and the housing rack, whereby suspect steering gears may not have been produced to
specifications.
The engineering review suggested that, over time, if bolts became loose, this could affect functionality of the
steering gear, and therefore potentially affect vehicle handling and control.
Vehicle assembly information and supplier production and process records were reviewed to determine the
number, and production dates, of potentially affected vehicles.
On November 9, 2023, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall.
BMW has not received any reports, nor is BMW otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries related to this
issue.

Description of Remedy :
Description of Remedy Program : The steering gear will be replaced.
Owners will be notified by First Class mail advising them of the recall and
to schedule an appointment with an authorized BMW dealer to have the
remedy performed for free. If this condition were to occur to a potentially
affected vehicle prior to this recall, the remedy would be covered by the
BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty program. Therefore, reimbursement
for a pre-notification remedy re Part 573.13 and Part 577.11 is not
necessary.
