SITUATION BMW AG is conducting a Voluntary Safety Recall (effective December 9, 2022) on a small number of Model Year 2023 BMW X5 vehicles that were produced between November 4, 2022, and November 30, 2022. The Recall Notice has been attached for further information. AFFECTED VEHICLES Vehicles which require this campaign to be completed will show it as “Open” when checked either in AIR, AWP, Campaign Summary, or Warranty Vehicle Inquiry. CAUSE The backrest frame of the front seat is attached to the left and right seat frames with two screws each. One or two screws may not have been fully tightened on the left front seat of the affected vehicles. It cannot be ruled out that the screw(s) on the seat back may come loose during prolonged use of the vehicle. CORRECTION Check the backrest frame screw connection on the left front seat and rework if necessary. Note: The right front seat is not affected and does not need to be checked. PROCEDURE Check/repair, select the affected vehicle (VIN) using the table below and check the screw(s) listed for optical fit(s) (attachment screw connection). To do this, follow the repair instructions: 52 14 040 Outer cover on the left front seat… or 52 14 041 Left front seat inner cover… Attention: The screws on the backrest frame must not be tightened (screw lock)! If the affected screw (s) are missing or not properly fastened, they must be replaced. Seat rail mounting screws must be replaced once seat has been removed (9321690 Fillister head screw – Qty 4). During seat assembly, the supplier noticed that a seat had not been properly assembled. The supplier informed BMW that some driver seats, which may not have been produced to specifications, may have been delivered to a vehicle assembly plant. An engineering investigation was initiated, supply chain logistics were reviewed, and the supplier examined their production process records. Analyses found that on November 2, 2022, software parameters for the seat backrest bolt torquing process had been updated with incorrect information. As a result, it could be possible for a backrest to be attached with bolts containing an out-of-specification torque even though the values would appear to be within specification. Vehicle assembly information and supplier production and process records were reviewed to determine the number, and production dates, of potentially affected vehicles. On December 12, 2022, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall. BMW has not received any reports, nor is BMW otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries related to this issue. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : The driver seat will be inspected and, if necessary, the affected backrest attachment bolt will be replaced. Owners will be notified by phone and, if necessary, notified by First Class mail, advising them of the recall and to schedule an appointment with an authorized BMW dealer to have the remedy performed for free. If this condition were to occur to a potentially affected vehicle prior to this recall, the remedy would be covered by the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty program. Therefore, reimbursement for a pre-notification remedy re Part 573.13 and Part 577.11 is not necessary.
