R 1300 GS VARIO CASE RECALL INFORMATION
Vario Top Case – Recall 24E-020:
- Description of defect or noncompliance:
- This safety recall involves the dealer accessory top case. The locking flap of the top case (fastening the top case to the luggage carrier of the motorcycle) may appear to be securely closed by the user. However, in this condition, the key can be removed. If this occurred, the top case would not be securely fastened to the motorcycle.
- Description of safety risk:
- If the top case detached from the motorcycle, it could become a hazard for road users, and increase the risk of a crash.
Vario Side Cases – Recall 24E-029:
- Description of defect or noncompliance:
- This safety recall involves the dealer accessory side cases. The lid of the side case may appear to be securely closed by the user; however, in isolated cases, both latch hooks may not have snapped properly into the lock. If this occurred, the side case would not be securely closed and could open during riding.
- Description of safety risk:
- If the side case lid opened while riding, the contents of the side case could fall out. Also, the hinges and holding strap may not securely hold the lid and could break, causing the lid to become detached from the side case. The case contents and/or the lid could become a hazard for road users and increase the risk of a crash.
PROCEDURE
In principle, there must be an order for one or more parts of the Vario luggage system and a customer complaint.
Recommended Utilization
This compensation should be an active response to a negative customer experience e.g., customer expressly complains about the delayed delivery or repair of the accessories (and this could possibly jeopardize the delivery/retail report of the vehicle as a result).
Compensation can be used towards a future purchase of the Vario Case/s. Alternatively items such as soft bags are primarily suitable substitutes.

Chronology :
On October 31,2023, during a dealer demonstration ride of a BMW R 1300 GS in a non-US market, a side case lid opened, the hinges and holding strap broke and the lid contacted the roadway. An engineering investigation was initiated, the part was returned for analysis, and the supplier was contacted.
Tests and analyses were planned to focus on the design of the locking mechanism and the hinges to understand the precision of the locking feature, and the mechanical resistance for the latch hooks when pushed for closing.
The supplier reviewed its records and confirmed that all side cases since start of production had been tested in a 100% end-of-line test, which ensured that all cases would be capable of secure latching if operated correctly.
Additional customer complaints were received in non-US markets, in which customers complained that their side case lids had opened and, in most cases, became detached and contacted the roadway. These parts were requested to be returned for analysis. The first field part was received for analysis on December 1, 2023.
Between December 2023 and March 2024, tests and analyses found that improper locking of the latch hooks was facilitated by the geometry of the latch hooks and the position of the hinges. Additional analyses confirmed that for a lid to detach, both latch hooks would need to be improperly secured. The tests indicated that even if only one of two latch hooks (upper left- or right-hand corner of the side case) was properly locked, the lid would not open even under severe riding stress. Therefore, side cases opening during riding had to be improperly latched on both corners.
On March 14, 2024, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall for the accessory side cases.
Between November 2023 and March 2024, approximately 14 customer complaints were received in non-US markets.
BMW has not received any reports, nor is BMW otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries that relate to this issue.

BMW Motorcycle Dealer Accessory Side Cases for R 1300 GS Part No. : 77 41 9 444 361/362 Size : NR Function : NR
Descriptive Information : Approximately 1,600 dealer accessory side cases (800 sets left/right) may not have been produced by the supplier according to specifications.
Basis for recall population determination: Accessory sales records and parts logistics information were reviewed to determine the number of potentially affected side cases that may have been delivered to dealers or retailed to customers. Recall component difference to non-recall component: The dealer accessory side cases may not have been produced by the supplier according to specifications. Production Dates : JUN 29, 2023 – NOV 23, 2023
Description of Defect :
Description of the Defect : This safety recall involves the dealer accessory side cases. The lid of the side case may appear to be securely closed by the user. However, in isolated cases, both latch hooks may not have snapped properly into the lock. If this occurred, the side case would not be securely closed and could open during riding.
FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR
Description of the Safety Risk : If the side case lid opened while riding, the contents of the side case could fall
out. Also, the hinges and holding strap may not securely hold the lid and Part 573 Safety Recall Report 24E-029 Page 2 could break, causing the lid to become detached from the side case. The case contents and/or the lid could become a hazard for road users and increase the risk of a crash.

Between December 2023 and March 2024, tests and analyses found that improper locking of the latch hooks The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Part 573 Safety Recall Report 24E-029 Page 3 was facilitated by the geometry of the latch hooks and the position of the hinges. Description of Remedy :
Description of Remedy Program : The locking mechanism and hinges of the side cases will be reworked to
ensure that they are functioning correctly. Although owner notification is not required – because the last known purchasers to BMW of the accessory side cases are the motorcycle dealers
– nevertheless, BMW plans to notify R 1300 GS owners who have purchased a motorcycle as of the date of this report. These owners will be notified by First Class mail and instructed to take their accessory side cases to an authorized BMW motorcycle dealer to have the remedy performed for free. If this condition were to occur to a potentially affected accessory side case prior to this recall, the remedy would be covered by the BMW New Parts and Accessories Limited Warranty program.
Therefore, reimbursement for a pre-notification remedy re Part 573.13 and Part 577.11 is not necessary.
