March 19, 2020 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 20V166000
Brake Fluid Cap Missing Information/FMVSS 122
Improper brake system maintenance could affect braking performance and increase the risk of a crash.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V166
Manufacturer BMW of North America, LLC
Components SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
Potential Number of Units Affected 365
Summary
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW
) is recalling certain 2018-2020 RnineT Scrambler and RnineT, 2020 R1250R and R1250RS, 2019-2020 Rnine T Pure, R1250GS, R1250GS Adventure and R1250RT and 2018 RnineT Racer motorcycles. The brake fluid reservoir cap may not clearly state the required type of brake fluid and the process for filling the reservoir, possibly leading to an improper maintenance procedure. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 122, “Motorcycle Brake Systems.”
Remedy
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake fluid reservoir cap, free of charge. The recall began December 23, 2020. Owners may contact BMW
customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Update: Vehicles with milled brake fluid reservoir cover – Stop Sale and Recall
New milled brake fluid reservoir covers are expected to be available at the end of June. The dealer direct posting has been updated to reflect this information. Additionally, Dealers should reach out to customers who purchased the covers “over the counter” and advise them of the recall, as retail parts sales information is not transmitted to BMW Motorrad USA. A sample letter is attached with the relevant information.
Customers who purchased a vehicle affected by this recall will receive a letter via US mail from BMW Motorrad USA notifying them of the recall starting next week. A second letter will be sent at a later date, notifying the customer that dealers are ready to repair their vehicle when parts are available.
Update: Vehicles with milled brake fluid reservoir cover – Stop Sale and Recall option codes 796, 797, 798, 799, 79G, 79H, 79I, 79J, 79K
NHTSA STATEMENT
Please be reminded that it is a violation of federal law (The Safety Act) for you to sell, lease or deliver any new motorcycle covered by this notification until the repair has been performed. This means that dealers may not legally deliver new motorcycles to consumers until they are fixed or use/sell replacement equipment/parts subject to this recall. Note also that substantial civil penalties apply to violations of the Safety Act. You should not sell, lease or deliver any Certified Pre-Owned or used motorcycles subject to a safety recall until the repair is completed. Follow any special instructions that we provide to you for the return or disposition of recall parts.
Recall 20V-166
This Stop Sale is also a Recall due to a non-compliance with NHTSA regulations.
Please be advised that replacement milled brake fluid reservoir covers are estimated to be available at the end of June 2020.
Vehicles that are marked with the special defect code STOP340005 are subject to a delivery stop. Models included are R nineT, R 1250 R and R 1250 GS/GSA that were produced with a milled brake fluid reservoir cover (option codes 796, 797, 798, 799, 79G, 79H, 79I, 79J, 79K), which may not fully conform to legal requirements.
Vehicles can still be sold/delivered if the cover is replaced with a non-milled (standard) original BMW brake fluid reservoir cover which will bring the vehicle into compliance. The standard cover and 2FRU should be claimed using defect code 85 99 00 37 MY. The repair order number must be entered in the RDR override. New vehicles should only be updated with the standard cover when retailed, please do not update unsold vehicles.
In addition, we are updating a small number of bikes at the warehouse with the standard cover so they can be delivered to dealers who are waiting for these units.
In both cases, BMW Motorrad USA will track these vehicles and customers will be included in the recall mailing once parts are available to have the new milled brake fluid reservoir cover installed. Any vehicles you have remaining in inventory will need to be updated at that time.
Recall 20E-013:
A small number of customers may have purchased a milled cap over the counter as an
accessory. Please check your records to determine if a customer has purchased a milled cap from your dealership. If you have a record with customer contact information, although parts are not yet available, please contact these customers to inform them of this recall. A sample copy of the customer letter is attached to aid in the process. We plan to update this information when parts become available.
Further updates will be provided when new milled covers are available.
