Summary

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2020 Z4 M40i, Z4 sDrive30i, 330i and 330i xDrive vehicles as well as 2020 Toyota Supra vehicles. The headlight control units may fail causing a loss of one or both of the headlights.

 

Remedy

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the headlight control units, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin January 17, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

Vehicles which require this Recall Campaign to be completed will show it as “Open” when checked either in AIR, the “Service Menu” of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or with ISPA NEXT. Recall letter and Q&A are attached.

 

SITUATION

BMW AG has issued a Recall (effective November 21, 2019) for a small number of Model Year 2020 BMW vehicles that were produced between July 17, 2019 and July 25, 2019. During supplier production, the two headlamp control units may not have been produced to specification.

 

CAUSE

Damage to both Front Light Electronic Modules (aka headlamp control unit “FLEL”) during supplier assembly.

 

CORRECTION

Replace both Front Light Electronic Modules.

 

PROCEDURE

1. Remove both headlights as described in repair instructions REP 63 12 003 Removing and installing the left headlight.
2. Replace both Front Light Electronic Modules as described in repair instructions REP 63 11 760 Replacing the control unit for Frontal Light Electronics on the left.
3. Program the vehicle using ISTA 4.21.1x or higher (released December 6, 2019)

Note: If the headlight has already failed, the counter in the BDC must first be reset before programming, otherwise the new control unit cannot be activated and therefore cannot be programmed.

BMW AG has issued a Delivery Stop (effective November 21, 2019) on a small number of Model Year 2020 BMW vehicles that were produced between July 16, 2019 and October 18, 2019.  During supplier production, the headlamp control unit may not have been produced to specifications.

This Delivery Stop has been upgraded to a Recall (effective November 27, 2019).

 

Please be reminded that it is a violation of federal law (The Safety Act) for you to sell, lease or deliver any new motor vehicle covered by this notification until the recall repair has been performed.  This means that centers may not legally deliver new motor vehicles to consumers until they are fixed or use/sell replacement equipment/parts subject to this recall.  Note also that substantial civil penalties apply to violations of the Safety Act. 

 

Also, you should not sell, lease or deliver any Certified Pre-Owned or used vehicles subject to a safety recall until the repair is completed.

RE: Recall 19V-850: Headlamp Control Unit – SI B63 12 19

BMW AG has issued a Delivery Stop (effective November 21, 2019) on a small number of Model Year 2020 BMW vehicles that were produced between July 16, 2019 and October 18, 2019.  During supplier production, the headlamp control unit may not have been produced to specifications.

This Delivery Stop has been upgraded to a Recall (effective November 27, 2019).

 

Please be reminded that it is a violation of federal law (The Safety Act) for you to sell, lease or deliver any new motor vehicle covered by this notification until the recall repair has been performed.  This means that centers may not legally deliver new motor vehicles to consumers until they are fixed or use/sell replacement equipment/parts subject to this recall.  Note also that substantial civil penalties apply to violations of the Safety Act. 

 

Also, you should not sell, lease or deliver any Certified Pre-Owned or used vehicles subject to a safety recall until the repair is completed. 

 

Please follow any special instructions that we provide to you for the return or disposition of recall parts.

Q1.	Which BMW Group models in the US are potentially affected by this Safety Recall? Approximately 68 Model Year 2020 BMW 3 Series and Z4 vehicles in the US, produced between July and October 2019, are potentially affected.
Q2.	What is the specific issue? During supplier production, the headlamp control unit may not have been produced to specifications.  Over time, this could affect the illumination of one or both of the headlamps, increasing the risk of a crash.
Q3.	Why are other BMW Group vehicles not included in this Safety Recall? The headlamp control unit was produced to specifications by the supplier.
Q4.	How did BMW Group become aware of this issue? BMW Group became aware of this issue through its quality control procedures.
Q5.	Can I determine if this issue exists in my vehicle?  If you notice that the illumination of one or both of the headlamps is affected, your vehicle may be experiencing this issue.
Q6.	What should I do if I notice this condition in my vehicle? If this condition occurs, please contact your authorized BMW center immediately to have this Safety Recall performed.
Q7.	Can I continue to drive my vehicle (before I receive my letter)? Yes.  However, when you receive a letter requesting you to make an appointment to have this Safety Recall performed by an authorized BMW center, please do so as soon as possible.  If you are not the only driver of this vehicle, please advise all other drivers of this important information.
Q8.	How will my vehicle be repaired? The headlamp control unit will be replaced for free and can take approximately one hour.
Q9.	Is BMW Group aware of any accidents or injuries in the US, involving these BMW Group vehicles associated with this Safety Recall? No.
Q10.	How will I be informed of this Safety Recall? You will receive a letter in January via First Class mail advising you of this Safety Recall and to schedule an appointment with an authorized BMW center to have this Safety Recall performed.  You can locate your nearest authorized BMW center at www.bmwusa.com/dealer.  To ensure the BMW Group has your most recent contact and vehicle information, please register your BMW vehicle at www.bmwusa.com/myBMW.  Registration is free, and will give you access to factory initiated campaigns and other information specific to your vehicle.
Q11.	Do I have to wait for my letter to have my vehicle serviced? Recall Campaign No. 19V-850: Headlamp Control Units

Dear BMW Owner / Lessee:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. BMW AG has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain Model Year 2020 BMW 3 Series and Z4 vehicles. Our records indicate that you are the owner of a potentially affected vehicle.

 

Why are we contacting you?

We are pleased to inform you that we are ready to perform this recall. If you have not had this recall performed, please contact your authorized BMW center immediately to schedule an appointment. Visit www.bmwusa.com/dealer to locate your nearest BMW center.

 

What could happen?

The headlamp control unit(s) may not have been produced to supplier specifications. This could cause one or both of the headlamps and front turn signals to stop functioning. Driving without a turn signal or with both headlamp(s) disabled could increase the risk of a crash.

If this occurs, a message will be displayed in the instrument cluster and a faster clicking sound will be heard when attempting to use the turn signal. Contact an authorized BMW center to have this recall performed immediately. If you are not the only driver of this vehicle, please advise all other drivers and passengers of this important information.

 

What will BMW do?

The headlamp control unit(s) will be replaced for free which could take approximately one hour.

 

What if I am not the current owner of this vehicle?

You can update the vehicle ownership or your contact information by completing the enclosed postage-paid card or by registering at https://www.bmwusa.com/myBMW. If you are a vehicle lessor, Federal Regulations require you to forward this notice to your lessee within ten days.

Conducir sin que las luces de giro o ambos faros funcionen, podrfa aumentar el riesgo de tener un accidente.

Si esto ocurre, se mostrara un mensaje en el tablero de instrumentos y se escuchara un chasquido mas rapido cuando intente usar la luz de giro. Comuniquese con un centro autorizado de BMW para que realicen esta retirada de inmediato.
