Summary
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2020 S 1000 RR motorcycles. The oil cooler hoses may not be attached properly to the oil pipes, possibly resulting in an oil leak.
Remedy
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the oil cooler assembly, including the hoses, free of charge. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Situation
The oil cooler inlet and outlet hoses may develop cracks where the oil hose connects with the oil pipe. If cracks occur, a small amount of oil may leak.
Identification of components
- Connection point (Arrows) of oil hose / oil pipe.
- √ New double crimp (left)
- X Old single crimp (right)
Cause
Cracks develop where the oil hose connects to the oil pipe.
Correction
Replace the oil cooler with an updated part.
Vehicles Affected
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Technical Campaign, it will be necessary to verify all VIN’s through AIR (Aftersales Information Research). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the repair or take no further action. Please note, VIN’s in DCS Vehicle History Check may not appear until 24-72 hours after the release of this bulletin, therefore AIR is the recommended method for determining open campaigns.

Please be reminded that it is a violation of federal law (The Safety Act) for you to sell, lease or deliver any new motorcycle covered by this notification until the recall repair has been performed. This means that dealers may not legally deliver new motorcycles to consumers until they are fixed or use/sell replacement equipment/parts subject to this recall. Note also that substantial civil penalties apply to violations of the Safety Act. Also, you should not sell, lease or deliver any Certified PreOwned or used motorcycles subject to a safety recall until the repair is completed. Please follow any special instructions that we provide to you for the return or disposition of recall parts.
Production Solution
As of December, vehicles are produced with updated oil coolers.
Service Solution
The description of the required position for exchanging the oil cooler may be taken from the current Repair and Service Data BMW Motorrad (AIR).
NOTE: Oil is drained to reduce spilling oil when removing the oil cooler, the oil drained can and should be reused.
Warranty Information
The repair described in this bulletin is covered under warranty regardless of time or mileage. Reimbursement for this Recall Campaign is through normal claim entry utilizing the following information:

Obtain and confirm the part numbers for your specific vehicle by entering the chassis number in either ETK or AIR which takes into account specific equipment and/or options.
As parts stock will be limited at first, they will be allocated for urgent requests only. Urgent requests are defined as a customer bike down, an escalated consumer complaint or a sold unit that is waiting delivery. All request must be made through an IDS ticket with a valid VIN number.
Once sufficient inventory is available, parts will be release on a fair share basis for in-stock units.

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. BMW AG has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain Model Year 2020 BMW S 1000 RR motorcycles. Our records indicate that you are the owner of a potentially affected motorcycle.
Why are we contacting you?
We are pleased to inform you that we are ready to perform this important Safety Recall. Please contact your authorized BMW Motorcycle dealer immediately to schedule an appointment. To locate your nearest BMW motorcycle dealer, visit www.bmwmotorcycles.com/dealer.
What could happen?
The oil cooler hoses (supply and return) may not have been attached in a sufficient manner to prevent a leak. If a leak develops, oil could contact the rear wheel, affect handling and control, and increase the risk of a crash.
If you notice smoke due to oil contact with the exhaust manifold, an odor of burnt oil, or see oil on the ground, your motorcycle may be experiencing this issue. If this occurs, please contact BMW Motorcycle Roadside Assistance at 1-877-680-2176 to have your motorcycle brought to the nearest authorized Motorcycle dealer.
If you are not the only rider of this motorcycle, please advise all other riders of this important information.
What will BMW do?
The oil cooler assembly (including hoses) will be replaced for free, and will take several hours.
What if the current motorcycle ownership information is incorrect?

Approximately 323 Model Year 2020 BMW S 1000 RR motorcycles in the US, produced between Mar 2019 and Aug 2019, are potentially affected.
Q2. What is the specific issue?
Over time, the oil cooler hose(s) may develop cracks which could allow oil to leak from the hose and onto the rear tire.
Q3. What can happen as a result of this issue?
If oil were to contact the rear tire, this could affect handling and control of the motorcycle, and increase the risk of a crash.
Q4. Can I continue to ride my motorcycle?
Yes. However, when you receive a letter via First Class mail from BMW informing you that the remedy for this Safety Recall is available, please contact an authorized BMW motorcycle dealer to have this performed as soon as possible. If you are not the only rider of this motorcycle, please advise all other riders of this important information.

Recall Update January 2020
Please see the below update regarding the latest status and actions being completed for the various recalls:
Recall 19V-697: K67 (S 1000 RR): Service bulletin 17-01-19 was published last month and is available on TIS 2.0. Parts are now in-stock, all back orders have been released. In addition, vehicles in the warehouse started being repaired last week and are continuing this week. In addition, we do expect approximately 250 Non-recall affected S 1000 RRs to arrive in the USA within the next 30 days now that normal production has been resumed. Units inbound are visible to dealers on their DAR. Look for units in status 182 or later.
A second customer notification letter will be sent out later this month letting customer know they can now contact their dealer to schedule a repair.

As communicated last week in regards to all urgent requests tor Recall 19V-697: K67 (S 1000 RR) received through IDS; at this time all requests nave been processed and dealers should receive parts in the next few days.
Additionally, an additional shipment of oil coolers nave arrived in each RDC. Parts are now open to dealers for normal orders. Please place reasonable orders as needed.
Bikes in RDC inventory will be updated in the next few weeks and made available tor allocation.

Recall 19V-697: K67 (S 1000 bulletin 17-01-19 will be published also at the end of this week A limited amount ot pans will be available CWI. We expect to have enough pans for this recall available by the end of January. Request parts through an IDS ticket tor qualitying urgent cases only.
