Summary
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2020 X3 sDrive30i, X3 xDrive30i, and X3 M40i vehicles, X4 xDrive30i, and X4 M40i vehicles. The front axle swivel bearings may not have been properly heat treated during manufacturing, reducing their strength and possibly causing them to break.
Remedy
BMW has notified owners and instructed them to not drive their vehicles. Dealers will replace the front axle swivel bearings, free of charge. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

SITUATION
BMW of North America, LLC is conducting a Voluntary Safety Recall (effective September 19, 2019) on a small number of Model Year 2020 BMW vehicles that were produced between August 25, 2019 and September 3, 2019.
One or both swivel bearings of the front suspension may not have been produced to supplier specifications. They could become damaged, affect vehicle handling and control, and increase the risk of a crash.
Potentially affected vehicles are not to be driven. Handle the vehicles very carefully when moving into the workshop.
CAUSE
The swivel bearing may not have been produced to supplier specifications.
CORRECTION
Replace the left swivel bearing.
PROCEDURE
Handle the vehicles very carefully when moving into the workshop.
Replace the left swivel bearing, as per repair manual RA 31 21 090 Replace left/right swivel bearing.

Please be reminded that it is a violation of federal law (The Safety Act) for you to sell, lease or deliver any new motor vehicle covered by this notification until the recall repair has been performed. The BMW Customer Relations Department will contact potentially affected
customers and will inform them not to drive their vehicle and that the
dealer will reach out with the next steps. Customer Relations will be in
contact with you first and will ask your assistance with transporting
customer vehicles and providing loaner vehicles.
