Chronology :
On July 13, 2023, BMW became aware of a possible issue involving the Integrated Transmission Control Unit (ITCU) from its supplier. The supplier indicated that during certain quality assurance tests, some parts became suspect. As a result, additional parts which had successfully completed the tests and that had been retained, were then subject to further testing and analyses, including photo-microscopy. The micrographs indicated that some portion of the welding seams may have been suspect. Additional testing, involving shaker tests to simulate long term durability, were performed.
Between August and September, further in-depth reviews of the information and data provided by the supplier were conducted. This led to further requests for additional information and data from the supplier involving production process testing details, production lot information, and scope parameters.
In October and November, further evaluations were conducted, including failure modes and affects analyses. Information from the field was reviewed to determine if any vehicles had experienced the issue.
Vehicle assembly information and supplier production and process records were reviewed to determine the number, and production dates, of potentially affected vehicles.
On November 29, 2023, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall.
During its analyses, BMW was not aware of any customer complaints, warranty claims, or field reports that may be related to this issue and, similarly, Toyota was not aware of any non-dealer field reports or warranty claims that may be related to this issue.
BMW and Toyota have not received any reports, nor are BMW and Toyota otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries that may be related to this issue.

BMW Diagnostic & Reprogramming
Introduction
The Online Service System (OSS) has been developed specifically for independent automotive workshops to provide an extensive range of resources. The following applications are available in the OSS:
ISTA Diagnosis Application
Vehicle diagnostics from the Z3/E36, with the BMW ICOM, or with a J2534 pass-thru tool (from model year 1996).
- Fault Code Diagnosis
- Test Plans
- Repair Instructions (E30 or higher)
- Technical Data
- Wiring diagrams
Web ISTA Information Application
WebISTA has been developed to provide an information only application for users that do not require all of the services included in the ISTA diagnostics application.
- Repair Instructions (E30 or higher)
- Technical Data
- Tightening torques
- Wiring diagrams
You can search using document title, document number and subject areas as the search criteria. The desired information is displayed by means of graphics and explanatory text.
ISTA/P Online - Control Module Reprogramming
With ISTA/P you can reprogram the onboard control modules that are capable of software reprogramming. For ISTA/P, a data interface, a power supply and an Internet connection are required. The data interface can be a BMW Group ICOM interface or a "Pass-Thru Tool (PTT)" that fulfills the requirements of the SAE J2534 standard.
What is needed to diagnose and program with the BMW OSS?
The OSS consists of a desktop or laptop PC connected to BMW over the Internet. To connect to the vehicle you can use the BMW authorized diagnostic interface "integrated communication optical module (ICOM)" or use a J2534 "Pass Thru Tool (PTT)".
Note
Connection to OSS works only on PCs where no proxy connections are used.
For information about vehicle reprogramming and diagnostics using J2534 click here.

VIN Range 1 : Begin : NR End : NR Not sequential Description of Defect :
Description of the Defect : The integrated transmission control unit, which is part of the transmission mechatronics module, may not have been produced according to specifications by the supplier. Specifically, the weld seam of the two halves of the control unit’s housing / cover may not have been manufactured properly. As a result, this could allow automatic transmission oil to leak into the transmission control unit which could then contact electronic components. If this happened, it could affect the operation of the clutch pressure control valves.

Description of the Safety Risk : If the function and operation of the transmission was affected, this could lead to a seizure of the transmission gears. Transmission seizure at high speed could affect vehicle handling and control and increase the risk of a crash.

Description of Remedy :
Description of Remedy Program : The transmission mechatronics module, which contains the integrated
transmission control unit, will be replaced. If necessary, the automatic transmission fluid will also be replaced.
Owners will be notified by First Class mail advising them of the recall and to schedule an appointment with an authorized BMW / Toyota dealer to have the remedy performed for free. If this condition were to occur to a potentially affected vehicle prior to this recall, the remedy would be covered by the BMW / Toyota New Vehicle Limited Warranty program.
Therefore, reimbursement for a pre-notification remedy re Part 573.13 and Part 577.11 is not necessary.
