AFFECTED VEHICLES
Vehicles which require this campaign to be completed will show it as “Open” when checked either in AIR, AWP, Campaign Summary, or Warranty Vehicle Inquiry.
Please make sure you check your dealer inventory as soon as possible. You can see a list of affected vehicles in Inventory Campaign Details (ICD) under ROSS.
SITUATION
BMW AG is conducting a Voluntary Safety Recall (effective December 14, 2023) on a small number of Model Year 2024 BMW
vehicles that were produced between October 10, 2023, and October 12, 2023.
The cylinder head cover may not have been produced according to specifications by the supplier. Over time, hairline cracks could form in the cover which could allow oil to leak into the engine compartment. In rare cases, this could lead to a thermal event.
The Recall Notice and Q&A are attached .
PROCEDURE
- Check the cylinder head cover for “WZ2” or“WZ3” embossed in the plastic surface (1).
- If “WZ3” is on the cylinder head cover, then itdoes not require replacement.
If “WZ2” is on the cylinder head cover, then it must be replaced.
If necessary,
- Refer to Repair Instruction 11 12 001 Replacing the cylinder head cover.
Note: The above embossed reference number information only applies to the original cylinder head cover that was installed on the engine at the factory.
Note: The new replacement cylinder head covers received from your RDC are not affected by this recall and can be installed without an inspection. Covers from the RDC may have the WZ2 code but have been verified as being OK to install.
Please review the affected vehicle’s Repair History (Claims) section located at the bottom of the Warranty Vehicle Inquiry (WVI) to confirm that a prior claim for a cylinder head cover replacement has not already been submitted and accepted.

Chronology :
On October 5, 2023, an oil leak was noticed during a quality assurance test after engine assembly. It appeared that the leak had occurred at the cylinder head cover. The cylinder head cover supplier was contacted, and an engineering review was initiated.
The supplier indicated that a production process issue had occurred in July, and that a containment action had been implemented for potentially suspect parts. Information from engine testing suggested that the containment action may not have been sufficient.
Between October 10th and the 31st, bench testing was performed with a hole prepared in the cover to simulate possible effects as a result of the production anomaly.
During November, the test results were analyzed and, as a precautionary measure, a stop ship was issued at the vehicle assembly plant. Further reviews and analyses were conducted to determine the possible timeline for part degradation in the field that could lead to an oil leak on vehicles equipped with potentially suspect parts. However, this would have also required a time-consuming endurance test to be performed.
Vehicle assembly information and supplier production and process records were reviewed to determine the number, and production dates, of potentially affected vehicles.
On December 13, 2023, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall.
BMW has not received any reports, nor is BMW
otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries related to this issue.

- Up until now, there have been no BMW

- Keeps your engine running like new by working to prevent damaging deposits and sludge buildup
- Provides excellent internal engine heat protection (up to 500 degrees F) and low temperature protection (up to -40 degrees F)
