Chronology :
In May 2022, a complaint was received pertaining to the functionality of the Automatic Door Locking (ADL) feature. A review found that a warranty claim had been processed involving replacement of the Body Domain Controller (BDC) Electronic Control Unit (ECU) on a Model Year 2022 BMW 4 Series.
During the latter half of 2022, additional warranty claims involving BDC ECU replacement were received and processed. As additional claims occurred, it was suggested that an analysis be undertaken to determine if BDC ECU replacement affected ADL functionality. By the end of 2022, approximately 27 claims involving ADL functionality became known.
In early 2023, an engineering review was initiated to understand if the BDC ECU warranty claims related to ADL functionality might have an effect upon vehicle performance in a crash. A review of regulatory requirements was performed. A review of test results indicated that FMVSS 214 requirements were met. The engineering review indicated that, in certain severe crashes, it could be possible for an unlocked door to open subsequent to the crash impact event.
Vehicle assembly information and dealer service records were reviewed to determine the number and production dates of potentially affected vehicles.
On February 15, 2023, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall.
BMW has not received any reports, nor is BMW
otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries that may be related to this issue.

Diagnostic & Reprogramming
Introduction
The Online Service System (OSS) has been developed specifically for independent automotive workshops to provide an extensive range of resources. The following applications are available in the OSS:
ISTA Diagnosis Application
Vehicle diagnostics from the Z3/E36, with the BMW ICOM, or with a J2534 pass-thru tool (from model year 1996).
- Fault Code Diagnosis
- Test Plans
- Repair Instructions (E30 or higher)
- Technical Data
- Wiring diagrams
Web ISTA Information Application
WebISTA has been developed to provide an information only application for users that do not require all of the services included in the ISTA diagnostics application.
- Repair Instructions (E30 or higher)
- Technical Data
- Tightening torques
- Wiring diagrams
You can search using document title, document number and subject areas as the search criteria. The desired information is displayed by means of graphics and explanatory text.
ISTA/P Online - Control Module Reprogramming
With ISTA/P you can reprogram the onboard control modules that are capable of software reprogramming. For ISTA/P, a data interface, a power supply and an Internet connection are required. The data interface can be a BMW Group ICOM interface or a "Pass-Thru Tool (PTT)" that fulfills the requirements of the SAE J2534 standard.
What is needed to diagnose and program with the BMW OSS?
The OSS consists of a desktop or laptop PC connected to BMW over the Internet. To connect to the vehicle you can use the BMW
authorized diagnostic interface "integrated communication optical module (ICOM)" or use a J2534 "Pass Thru Tool (PTT)".
Note
Connection to OSS works only on PCs where no proxy connections are used.

BMW AG is conducting a Voluntary Safety Recall (effective February 23, 2023) on certain Model
Year 2022 – 2023 BMW vehicles that were produced between September 8, 2021 and December
2, 2022.
Please be reminded that it is a violation of federal law (The Safety Act) for you to sell,
lease or deliver any new motor vehicle covered by this notification until the recall repair
has been performed. This means that Centers may not legally deliver new motor
vehicles to consumers until they are fixed or use/sell replacement equipment/parts
subject to this recall. Note also that substantial civil penalties apply to violations of the
Safety Act.
Also, you should not sell, lease or deliver any Certified Pre-Owned or used vehicles
subject to a safety recall until the repair is completed.
Please follow any special instructions that we provide to you for the return or disposition
of recall parts.
We appreciate all your assistance with this Recall.

Body Domain Controller
(BDC)
Model Year 2022-2023
BMW 3 Series, 4 Series, i4
Issue Date: 02/23/2023
Q1. Which BMW Group models in the US are potentially affected by this Safety Recall?
Certain Model Year 2022-2023 BMW 3 Series, 4 Series, and i4 models in the US are potentially affected.
Q2. What is the specific issue?
During a dealer service visit, in which the Body Domain Controller (BDC) was replaced, a necessary
vehicle programming and coding update may not have occurred. If this happened, the Automatic Door
Lock (ADL) function would no longer be set to “default on”. This could lead to an unlocked door condition
which, in certain severe crashes, could allow a door to open.
Q3. Why are other models / vehicles not included in this Safety Recall?
Other models which had a BDC replaced during a dealer service visit were appropriately updated.
Q4. Can I continue to drive my vehicle?
Yes. However, when you are notified by BMW of this Safety Recall, please contact an authorized BMW
center to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. For the latest updates to this Safety Recall,
please visit bmwusa.com/recall. If you are not the only driver of this vehicle, please advise all other
drivers of this important information.
Q5. How did BMW Group become aware of the issue?
BMW Group became aware of the issue through its quality control procedures.
Q6. How will I be informed of this Safety Recall?
Owners of potentially affected vehicles will be notified via First Class mail and requested to schedule an
appointment with an authorized BMW center to have the remedy performed. Owners can locate their
nearest authorized BMW center at bmwusa.com/dealer.
To ensure BMW has the most up-to-date contact and vehicle information, owners should register their
vehicle at www.bmwusa.com/myBMW. Registration is free and will give them access to other
information specific for their BMW vehicle. Alternatively, owners can visit bmwusa.com/recall and click
on “Manage recall notices and contact information”.
Q7. How will my vehicle be remedied?
Potentially affected vehicles will have the appropriate setting check and rest, if necessary, for free and
should take about one hour.
Q8. Do I have to wait for BMW to contact me to have the remedy performed?
Yes. We are in the process of implementing this Safety Recall to ensure that the necessary parts, tools,
and procedures are available. For the latest updates to this recall, please visit bmwusa.com/recall.

April 2023
Dear BMW Owner / Lessee:
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. BMW
AG has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain Model Year
2022-2023 BMW 3 Series, 4 Series, and i4 models. Our records indicate that you are the owner of a
potentially affected vehicle.
Why are we contacting you?
We are pleased to inform you that we are ready to perform this safety recall. If you have not had this
recall performed, please contact your authorized BMW center immediately to schedule an
appointment. Please visit bmwusa.com/dealer to locate your nearest authorized BMW center.
What could happen?
During a dealer service visit, your vehicle may have had an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) replaced
(the Body Domain Controller (BDC)) which controls Automatic Door Locking (ADL). If the BDC was
replaced, a corresponding vehicle software update may not have been performed, and the ADL function
would no longer be set to “default on”. This could lead to an unlocked door condition and, in
certain severe crashes, could allow a door to open, which could increase the risk of injury. BMW
recommends that, prior to your vehicle receiving the remedy, all doors should be manually
locked prior to driving.
If you are not the only driver of this vehicle, please advise all other drivers and passengers of this
important information.
What will BMW do?
Your vehicle will have the appropriate setting checked and, if necessary, reset for free which could take
about one hour.
There may be some options to help overcome the inconvenience of bringing your vehicle in for service,
if needed. Contact your local BMW center to check what may be available.
What if I am not the current owner of this vehicle?
If you changed your address or sold the vehicle, please let us know by visiting bmwusa.com/mybmw or
by contacting BMW Customer Relations (see left side of page for contact info). If you are a vehicle
lessor, Federal Regulations require you to forward this notice to your lessee within ten days.
What if I have additional questions?
For the latest updates to this recall, please visit bmwusa.com/recall. Should you have any questions
about this recall, please contact your authorized BMW center. If you need additional assistance, please
contact BMW Customer Relations.
If your BMW center is unable to remedy the defect without charge or within a reasonable period of time,
you may notify the Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1200 New Jersey Ave.,
S.E., Washington, DC 20590, call the toll-free Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY:
1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.safercar.gov.
Please be assured that your safety is important to us, and we sincerely apologize if this safety recall
causes any inconvenience. We recommend that you and your passengers wear your safety belt at all
times.
Sincerely,

Estimado propietario o arrendatario de un vehículo BMW:
Le enviamos este aviso de conformidad con la Ley Nacional de Tránsito y Seguridad de los Vehículos
Motorizados (National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act).
Si no
Highway Traffic Safety Administration), en 1200 New Jersey Ave., S.E., Washington, DC 20590, llamar
Atentamente.

Description of the Defect : This safety recall involves Body Domain Controller (BDC) Electronic Control Unit (ECU) replacement parts that may have been installed, on vehicles of a specific engineering release and production configuration, during a dealer service visit. The BDC ECU controls the Automatic Door Locking (ADL) function. Vehicles subject to this recall were correctly produced, in which the ADL function is set to “default on” (door are automatically locked when the vehicle begins to accelerate from rest), and, the doors can only be unlocked after the vehicle comes to rest. Vehicles subject to this recall did not receive a correct programming and coding update during a dealer service visit when the BDC ECU was replaced. As a result, ADL functionality would not operate as intended, and could lead to an unlocked door condition. In certain severe crashes, it could be possible for an unlocked door to open subsequent to the crash impact event.

BMW has not received any reports, nor is BMW otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries that may be related to this issue.
