Chronology :
On January 18, 2023, an atypical test result occurred during digital key testing. An engineering review was initiated.
Additional testing and analyses involving various vehicle types and build configurations was performed. Worldwide regulatory requirements, including FMVSS 118, were reviewed.
Analyses of vehicle electronic control unit communications involving the functionality of the digital key were performed. It was suggested that, due to the test results obtained in certain vehicle operating conditions, there might be an issue related to FMVSS 118. Further reviews of software / coding indicated that certain aspects of the software, specifically for US market regulatory requirements, may not have been coded as intended.
Vehicle assembly information and supplier production records were reviewed to determine the number and production dates of potentially affected vehicles.
On February 10, 2023, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary non-compliance recall.
BMW has not received any reports, nor is BMW
otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries that may be related to this issue.

Diagnostic & Reprogramming
Introduction
The Online Service System (OSS) has been developed specifically for independent automotive workshops to provide an extensive range of resources. The following applications are available in the OSS:
ISTA Diagnosis Application
Vehicle diagnostics from the Z3/E36, with the BMW ICOM, or with a J2534 pass-thru tool (from model year 1996).
- Fault Code Diagnosis
- Test Plans
- Repair Instructions (E30 or higher)
- Technical Data
- Wiring diagrams
Web ISTA Information Application
WebISTA has been developed to provide an information only application for users that do not require all of the services included in the ISTA diagnostics application.
- Repair Instructions (E30 or higher)
- Technical Data
- Tightening torques
- Wiring diagrams
You can search using document title, document number and subject areas as the search criteria. The desired information is displayed by means of graphics and explanatory text.
ISTA/P Online - Control Module Reprogramming
With ISTA/P you can reprogram the onboard control modules that are capable of software reprogramming. For ISTA/P, a data interface, a power supply and an Internet connection are required. The data interface can be a BMW Group ICOM interface or a "Pass-Thru Tool (PTT)" that fulfills the requirements of the SAE J2534 standard.
What is needed to diagnose and program with the BMW OSS?
The OSS consists of a desktop or laptop PC connected to BMW over the Internet. To connect to the vehicle you can use the BMW
authorized diagnostic interface "integrated communication optical module (ICOM)" or use a J2534 "Pass Thru Tool (PTT)".
Note
Connection to OSS works only on PCs where no proxy connections are used.

SITUATION
BMW AG has issued a Delivery Stop (effective February 9, 2023) on certain Model Year 2022 – 2023 BMW

sunroof and convertible top for a certain period of time until the vehicle is locked, despite the digital key
being removed from the WCA.
CORRECTION

This bulletin will be updated when the software becomes available.

windows systems). Our records indicate that you are the owner of a potentially affected vehicle.
Why are we contacting you?
We are pleased to inform you that we will be ready to perform this recall starting on May 1st.
If you have not had this recall performed, please contact your authorized BMW center
immediately to schedule an appointment. Please visit bmwusa.com/dealer to locate your
nearest authorized BMW center.
What could happen?
When the digital key is removed from the vehicle, continued operation of the windows and roof
systems may be possible, which could increase the risk of injury. Please note that vehicles are
equipped with an auto-reversal / anti-trap feature to help reduce the risk of injury. BMW
recommends that, prior to your vehicle receiving the remedy, and to reduce the risk of
possible injury, drivers only use the standard vehicle key fob, and not use the digital key.
If you are not the only driver of this vehicle, please advise all other drivers and passengers
of this important information.
What will BMW do?
Potentially affected vehicles will receive a software update for free which should take about one
hour. There may be some options to help overcome the inconvenience of bringing your vehicle in
for service, if needed. Contact your local BMW center to check what may be available.
What if I am not the current owner of this vehicle?
If you changed your address or sold the vehicle, please let us know by visiting
bmwusa.com/mybmw or by contacting BMW Customer Relations (see left side of page for contact
info). If you are a vehicle lessor, Federal Regulations require you to forward this notice to
your lessee within ten days.
What if I have additional questions?

(National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act).
Carreteras (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), en 1200 New Jersey Ave., S.E.,
Atentamente.

Subject: BMW Recall 23V-xxx: Reset Vehicle Data (BDC)
BMW AG is conducting a Voluntary Safety Recall (effective February 23, 2023) on certain Model
Year 2022 – 2023 BMW vehicles that were produced between September 8, 2021 and December 2,
2022.
During a dealer service visit, in which the Body Domain Controller (BDC) was replaced, a necessary
vehicle programming and coding update may not have occurred. If this happened, the Automatic
Door Lock (ADL) function would no longer be set to “default on”. This could lead to an unlocked
door condition which, in certain severe crashes, could allow a door to open.
The Recall Notice and Q&A have been attached for further information.
The bulletin will be updated next week.

The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-099
