Chronology :
In early September 2022, BMW became aware of a potential issue during testing when it was reported that three engines on a test bench exhibited signs of leakage at the clutch cover. Also, an out-of-specification torque value was found during unbolting of the clutch cover on three additional engines. An engineering review was initiated.
A review of engine testing records suggested that there were two more engines, tested in early June and July 2022, which may have exhibited similar symptoms.
Electronic records involving the engine production process were checked which indicated a reduction in torque when mounting the clutch cover. Further reviews with the supplier found that bolts were not produced to specifications.
On September 30, 2022, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall.
BMW has not received any reports, nor is BMW
otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries that may be related to this issue.

Production Dates : MAY 10, 2022 – SEP 09, 2022 VIN Range 1 : Begin : NR End : NR Not sequential Description of Defect : Description of the Defect : This safety recall involves the mounting of the clutch cover. The clutch cover is attached with 10 bolts which are treated with a special wax-like lubricant to preclude corrosion. As certain bolts may not have been treated with this lubricant according to specification, the clutch cover may not have been mounted with the appropriate torque. Over time, this could allow the bolts to loosen. If one or more bolts loosened, this could result in oil leakage. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : If an oil leak occurred at the clutch cover, this could increase the risk of a crash, or could result in a thermal event. Description of the Cause : NR Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : The rider may notice an odor of burned oil. Oil may be visible on the clutch cover and on the ground. BMW has not received any reports, nor is BMW otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries that may be related to this issue. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : All 10 bolts which attach the clutch cover will be replaced. Owners will be notified by First Class mail and instructed to take their motorcycle to an authorized BMW motorcycle dealer to have the remedy performed for free. If this condition were to occur to a potentially affected motorcycle prior to this recall, the remedy would be covered by the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty program. Therefore, reimbursement for a pre-notification remedy re Part 573.13 and Part 577.11 is not necessary.
