Summary
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW
) is recalling certain 2023 330e and 330e xDrive hybrid electric vehicles. After shifting into reverse, the rearview camera software may cause a portion of the rearview image to be obstructed. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, “Rear Visibility.”
Remedy
Dealers will update the rearview camera software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 21, 2022. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-80-525-7417.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
Affected vehicles which require this Recall to be completed will show it as “Open” when checked either in AIR, the “Service Menu” of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System), ISPA NEXT or Warranty Vehicle Inquiry.
SITUATION
BMW AG has issued a Delivery Stop on certain Model Year 2023 BMW
330e models that were produced between August 3, 2022 and October 4, 2022.
As of October 6, 2022, this campaign has been upgraded to a Non-Compliance Recall.
Due to a software issue involving the rearview camera, potentially affected vehicles may not meet a Federal requirement. In certain vehicle operating conditions, the rearview camera image may be partially blocked.
The Recall Notice and Q&A have been attached for further information.
CAUSE
Software error in the MGU (Media Graphics Unit).
CORRECTION
Update the vehicle software with ISTA 4.38.1x or higher.
PROCEDURE
Determine what is the vehicle’s current I-level by either using AIR or the ISPA NEXT application, and as applicable:
Program the vehicle using ISTA 4.38.1x or higher (estimated release October 25, 2022; pending verification).

Yes. We are in the process of implementing this Non-Compliance Recall to ensure that the necessary parts, tools, and procedures are available. For the latest updates to this recall, please visit bmwusa.com/recall.
Chronology :
On August 26, 2022, BMW became aware of a potential issue during testing when the rearview camera image may not have displayed as intended in certain vehicle operating conditions when shifting into Reverse gear. An engineering review was initiated.
During September, functional tests were performed involving various vehicle build configurations and operational settings. A review of rearview camera regulatory requirements including FMVSS 111 was conducted. Analyses of vehicle software configurations and engineering releases were performed. Preliminary information suggested that a complete rearview camera image may not be visible under certain vehicle operating conditions.
Vehicle assembly information, production system records, and vehicle build configuration specifications including software coding levels were reviewed. These reviews were conducted to determine the specific vehicle models and option packages that could be potentially affected.
On September 30, 2022, it was determined that potentially affected vehicles may not fully conform to FMVSS 111 Section 5.5.5. As a result, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary recall.
BMW has not received any reports, nor is BMW
otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries that may be related to this issue.

ISTA/P Online - Control Module Reprogramming
With ISTA/P you can reprogram the onboard control modules that are capable of software reprogramming. For ISTA/P, a data interface, a power supply and an Internet connection are required. The data interface can be a BMW Group ICOM interface or a "Pass-Thru Tool (PTT)" that fulfills the requirements of the SAE J2534 standard.
What is needed to diagnose and program with the BMW OSS?
The OSS consists of a desktop or laptop PC connected to BMW over the Internet. To connect to the vehicle you can use the BMW
authorized diagnostic interface "integrated communication optical module (ICOM)" or use a J2534 "Pass Thru Tool (PTT)".
Note
Connection to OSS works only on PCs where no proxy connections are used.

Preliminary information suggested that a complete rearview camera image may not be visible under certain vehicle operating conditions. Vehicle assembly information, production system records, and vehicle build configuration specifications including software coding levels were reviewed. These reviews were conducted to determine the specific Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-747 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 vehicle models and option packages that could be potentially affected. On September 30, 2022, it was determined that potentially affected vehicles may not fully conform to FMVSS 111 Section 5.5.5. As a result, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary recall. BMW has not received any reports, nor is BMW otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries that may be related to this issue.
