Chronology :
On January 13, 2022, BMW was notified by the transmission supplier of a possibility that certain transmissions may not have been assembled according to specifications. The supplier had recently noticed that on one of the mechatronics units, all of the required bolts necessary to assemble the unit were not present. An engineering and supplier review was initiated.
During that review, supplier process records were analyzed. It was found that, due to a supplier control system error, mechatronic units which may have been misassembled were nevertheless moved along in the production sequence. A review of the supplier production database determined the specific units which may have been misassembled and, moreover, the specific bolts which may not have been included. In addition, due to parts traceability, specific potentially affected vehicles were able to be identified.
Vehicle assembly information and supplier production records were reviewed to determine the number and production dates of potentially affected vehicles.
On February 2, 2022, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary recall.
BMW has not received any reports, nor is BMW
otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries that may be related to this issue.

BMW has not received any reports, nor is BMW otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries that may be related to this issue. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : The transmission mechatronics unit will be replaced. Owners are planned to be notified by phone and, if necessary, will be notified by First Class mail and instructed to take their vehicle to an authorized BMW dealer to have the remedy performed for free. If this condition was noticed on a potentially affected vehicle prior to this recall, the remedy would be covered by the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty program. Therefore, reimbursement for a pre-notification remedy re Part 573.13 and Part 577.11 is not necessary.
