Steering Gear Tie Rod may Break
A broken steering tie rod would lead to a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW
) is recalling certain 2018-2019 BMW
X1 sDrive28i, X1 xDrive28i, 2019 X2 xDrive28i, MINI
Cooper S Convertible, Countryman, and John Cooper Works Countryman vehicles. The steering gear tie rod may have been assembled incorrectly, which may result in excessive wear of the tie rod end, eventually causing it to break.
Remedy
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles and replace the tie rods and ball joints as necessary, free of charge. The recall began October 11, 2019. Owners may contact BMW

RECALL CAMPAIGN 19V-601: STEERING GEAR TIE ROD
Please perform the procedure outlined in this Service Information on all affected vehicles before customer delivery. In the event the customer has already taken delivery of the vehicle, please perform the procedure the next time the vehicle is in the shop.
This Service Information Bulletin (Revision 2) replaces SI M32 01 19 dated September 2019.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
Vehicles which require this Recall Campaign to be completed will show it as “Open” when checked either in AIR, the “Service Menu” of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or with ISPA NEXT. Recall letter and Q&A are attached.
SITUATION
BMW of North America, LLC is conducting a Voluntary Safety Recall (effective August 8, 2019) on a small number of Model Year 2019 MINI
vehicles that were produced between March 15, 2019 and April 8, 2019. The cone collar disc may not have been installed on the tie rod.
CAUSE
During the manufacturing process, a cone collar disc on the tie rod may not have been installed.
CORRECTION
Check both tie rods, and replace one or both if necessary.
PROCEDURE
- Remove both front wheels.
- Remove and discard the tie rod nut (1) on left and right swivel bearing.
- Release the tie rods (2) from the swivel bearings
Examples:
Cone collar disc installed: no knurling visible on the shank.
Cone collar disc not installed: knurling visible on the shank (arrow).
- Inspect both tie rods for the presence of the cone collar disc.
- Is the cone collar disc installed?

- Yes = No further action required. Reinstall the tie rods as per repair manual RA 32 21 151 and properly torque the new M14 nuts
- No = Proceed to next step
- Replace the tie rod and swivel bearing as per the repair manual RA 32 21 151 and RA 31 21 090.
- Perform a wheel alignment procedure.

BMW of North America, LLC is conducting a Voluntary Safety Recall (effective August 8, 2019) on a small number of Model Year 2019 MINI
vehicles that were produced between March 15, 2019 and April 8, 2019.
Please be reminded that it is a violation of federal law (The Safety Act) for you to sell, lease or deliver any new motor vehicle covered by this notification until the recall repair has been performed. This means that centers may not legally deliver new motor vehicles to consumers until they are fixed or use/sell replacement equipment/parts subject to this recall. Note also that substantial civil penalties apply to violations of the Safety Act.
Also, you should not sell, lease or deliver any Certified Pre-Owned or used vehicles subject to a safety recall until the repair is completed.
