Windshield Wiper System
Chronology
20 Sep 2023
On December 12, 2022, BMW became aware from the supplier that, during an endurance test on a vehicle in development, which involved heavy loading among other test conditions, it appeared that the system was not able to successfully complete the test series.
On January 10, 2023, a similar test series was conducted, and a similar result occurred. It was suggested that, although the tests were performed on development vehicles, it could affect other vehicle types in production. An engineering investigation was initiated.
Between February and March, additional testing was planned and performed, including durability testing, and conditions involving heavy loads upon the system. Preliminary information indicated that, in certain extreme (e.g., heavy loading) conditions, system performance could be affected.
In April, further reviews and analyses were performed. It was suggested that, although the system performance could be affected in certain extreme conditions, the likelihood of the condition occurring and the system not performing as designed, was minimal. During this time, reviews and analyses of regulatory requirements, and any associated testing and test results, were performed, and it was found that all regulatory requirements were fulfilled.
Nevertheless, it was decided that further tests and analyses would be necessary to help understand, identify, and resolve the issue. Accordingly, a parts collection campaign was implemented to retrieve parts from the field for testing and evaluation, including a further understanding of the system behavior and rate of occurrence in the field.
Starting in May, a parts collection campaign was initiated, with the intent to perform additional tests and analyses on field returned parts. By August, field monitoring indicated that two US market vehicles had a wiper system repair performed, on June 13th and July 7th, respectively. A review of this information suggested that these two cases may be related to the issue.
Vehicle assembly information and supplier production and process records were reviewed to determine the number, and production dates, of potentially affected vehicles.
On September 13, 2023, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall.
BMW has not received any reports, nor is BMW otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries related to this issue.

Production Dates : OCT 13, 2022 – JAN 26, 2023 VIN Range 1 : Begin : NR End : NR Not sequential Description of Defect : Description of the Defect : The windshield wiper system may not, in certain loading conditions, function as intended. Due to a change by the supplier in the material property of the wiper lever, specifically the degree of hardness, the connection between the wiper lever and the knurled wiper motor axle could start to loosen and, over time, could stop working. As the connection loosens, a reduction in the amount of torque that is transferred from the wiper motor axle to the lever could occur. This could affect the ability of the wiper system to appropriately function during heavy loading conditions due to the increased resistance on, and an overload of, the system. Even if this occurred, the lever would remain attached to the wiper motor axle and, therefore, the wiper blades would not become a possible road hazard. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : In certain environmental and driving conditions, such as driving while heavy wet snow is precipitating, the wiper system may not function as intended.
