Chronology
07 Jun 2023
In late 2022, several NHTSA Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs) (dated Aug 29, Sep 16, Oct 10) were reviewed, in which drivers of Model Year 2022 BMW iX xDrive50 models indicated that their vehicles unexpectedly increased in speed. Generally, drivers indicated that these were low speed events and that depressing the brake pedal allowed their vehicle to slow and stop.
In January 2023, an engineering review was initiated which included technical analyses, testing, field monitoring, and risk assessment.
In February, a complaint (NHTSA VOQ dated Jan 11) in which the driver of a Model Year 2023 BMW iX M60 indicated a similar condition, but also stated that their vehicle was involved in a minor collision was reviewed. An examination of vehicle diagnostic information indicated that the acceleration parameters were consistent with values that could only be achieved with the accelerator pedal, and also that the cruise control system was not activated before, or during, the incident.
In mid-March, further analyses involving variations in vehicle speed, driving conditions, and steering parameters were performed. Additional field data was analyzed including warranty claims and customer complaints.
In late March, BMW identified and reviewed a complaint (NHTSA VOQ dated Mar 16) involving a Model Year 2023 BMW iX M60 with a similar description to those of the prior VOQs.
In April, further analyses, testing, and evaluations were performed, including driving tests involving vehicle speed, steering torque, and steering angle. Additional customer complaints were analyzed. Comparisons to other vehicle types were performed, including vehicle types from other markets, e.g., left-hand vs. right-hand drive vehicles.
Vehicle diagnostic information was reviewed suggesting that there may have been short term activations of the cruise control system during a time when there was a large steering wheel angle and/or torque. Further analyses of this preliminary finding were recommended.
Vehicle assembly and build configuration information, and software system records, were reviewed to determine the number, and production dates, of potentially affected vehicles.
On May 31, 2023, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall.
During the engineering review, BMW became aware of, and analyzed, five NHTSA VOQ customer complaints, and seven BMW customer complaints, involving BMW iX models that occurred between late 2022 and the date of the decision.
BMW has not received any reports, nor is BMW otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries related to this issue.

BMW Diagnostic & Reprogramming
Introduction
The Online Service System (OSS) has been developed specifically for independent automotive workshops to provide an extensive range of resources. The following applications are available in the OSS:
ISTA Diagnosis Application
Vehicle diagnostics from the Z3/E36, with the BMW ICOM, or with a J2534 pass-thru tool (from model year 1996).
- Fault Code Diagnosis
- Test Plans
- Repair Instructions (E30 or higher)
- Technical Data
- Wiring diagrams
Web ISTA Information Application
WebISTA has been developed to provide an information only application for users that do not require all of the services included in the ISTA diagnostics application.
- Repair Instructions (E30 or higher)
- Technical Data
- Tightening torques
- Wiring diagrams
You can search using document title, document number and subject areas as the search criteria. The desired information is displayed by means of graphics and explanatory text.
ISTA/P Online - Control Module Reprogramming
With ISTA/P you can reprogram the onboard control modules that are capable of software reprogramming. For ISTA/P, a data interface, a power supply and an Internet connection are required. The data interface can be a BMW Group ICOM interface or a "Pass-Thru Tool (PTT)" that fulfills the requirements of the SAE J2534 standard.
What is needed to diagnose and program with the BMW OSS?
The OSS consists of a desktop or laptop PC connected to BMW over the Internet. To connect to the vehicle you can use the BMW authorized diagnostic interface "integrated communication optical module (ICOM)" or use a J2534 "Pass Thru Tool (PTT)".
Note
Connection to OSS works only on PCs where no proxy connections are used.
For information about vehicle reprogramming and diagnostics using J2534 click here.
