Summary
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2022-2023 iX xDrive40, iX xDrive50, iX M60, i4 eDrive35, i4 eDrive40, i4 M50, and 2023 i7 xDrive60 vehicles. The high voltage battery electronic control unit (ECU) software may cause an interruption of electrical power.
Remedy
Dealers will update the high voltage battery ECU software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed February 10, 2023. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Due to a software issue, monitoring of the high-voltage battery charging process may be affected. This could lead to an interruption during high-voltage battery charging, a temporary loss of power while driving, or stalling.

Chronology :
On June 22, 2022, BMW became aware of a BMW electric vehicle at a dealer in China which contained a warning lamp regarding a drivetrain issue. Diagnostics indicated that the issue pointed to the high voltage battery electronic control unit. An engineering review was initiated.
Various tests and analyses were conducted including software and hardware tests, and a review of field data.
Laboratory and road tests were performed. Field monitoring at that time did not indicate that any vehicle had experienced a permanent (i.e., no ability to restart) loss of power. The analyses indicated that the warranty claim rate was less than 0.1%, although there were no known cases in the US market. Nevertheless, the engineering review and field monitoring activities continued.
In August and September, additional warranty cases involving a temporary (i.e., ability to restart) loss of power became known, but the rate was still well below 1%. Approximately five cases were received in the US. At that time, there were no known incidents involving a permanent loss of power. Analyses and testing continued.
By late November, approximately five additional warranty cases in the US became known, and results from additional tests and analyses were available. It was suggested that, during certain vehicle operating conditions, an increase in cases involving loss of power could occur over time.
Vehicle assembly information and supplier production and process records were reviewed to determine the number, and production dates, of potentially affected vehicles.
On December 13, 2022, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall.
BMW has not received any reports, nor is BMW otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries related to this issue.

ISTA/P Online – Control Module Reprogramming
With ISTA/P you can reprogram the onboard control modules that are capable of software reprogramming. For ISTA/P, a data interface, a power supply and an Internet connection are required. The data interface can be a BMW Group ICOM interface or a “Pass-Thru Tool (PTT)” that fulfills the requirements of the SAE J2534 standard.
What is needed to diagnose and program with the BMW OSS?
The OSS consists of a desktop or laptop PC connected to BMW over the Internet. To connect to the vehicle you can use the BMW authorized diagnostic interface “integrated communication optical module (ICOM)” or use a J2534 “Pass Thru Tool (PTT)”.
Note
Connection to OSS works only on PCs where no proxy connections are used.

Specifically, a misdiagnosis can sporadically occur within the battery management electronics, which could cause the electronic control unit to reset. If a reset occurs, this could cause an interruption of electrical power. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : If an interruption of electrical power occurs while driving, it may result in a brief loss of power, or stalling, which could increase the risk of a crash. However, a restart of the vehicle is possible, and would allow for continued driving. The driver would also be alerted by a warning message. Description of the Cause : NR Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : NR Involved Components : Component Name 1 : High Voltage Battery Software Component Description : High Voltage Battery Software Component Part Number : N/A – software issue Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : Panasonic Industrial Devices Europe GmbH Address : Zeppelinstrasse 19 Lueneburg Foreign States 21337 Country : Germany Chronology : On June 22, 2022, BMW became aware of a BMW electric vehicle at a dealer in China which contained a warning lamp regarding a drivetrain issue. Diagnostics indicated that the issue pointed to the high voltage battery electronic control unit. An engineering review was initiated. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-944 Page 4 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Various tests and analyses were conducted including software and hardware tests, and a review of field data. Laboratory and road tests were performed. Field monitoring at that time did not indicate that any vehicle had experienced a permanent (i.e., no ability to restart) loss of power. The analyses indicated that the warranty claim rate was less than 0.1%, although there were no known cases in the US market. Nevertheless, the engineering review and field monitoring activities continued. In August and September, additional warranty cases involving a temporary (i.e., ability to restart) loss of power became known, but the rate was still well below 1%. Approximately five cases were received in the US. At that time, there were no known incidents involving a permanent loss of power. Analyses and testing continued. By late November, approximately five additional warranty cases in the US became known, and results from additional tests and analyses were available. It was suggested that, during certain vehicle operating conditions, an increase in cases involving loss of power could occur over time. Vehicle assembly information and supplier production and process records were reviewed to determine the number, and production dates, of potentially affected vehicles. On December 13, 2022, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall. BMW has not received any reports, nor is BMW otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries related to this issue. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : The high voltage battery electronic control unit software will be updated. Owners will be notified by First Class mail advising them of the recall and to schedule an appointment with an authorized BMW dealer to have the remedy performed for free. If this condition were to occur to a potentially affected vehicle prior to this recall, the remedy would be covered by the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty program. Therefore, reimbursement for a pre-notification remedy re Part 573.13 and Part 577.11 is not necessary.
