If the label detaches from the motorcycle, proper tire pressure information may not be readily available. This could result in the rider improperly filling the tires which may affect motorcycle handling and control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2021 R 1250 RT, R 1250 R, R 1250 RS, R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure motorcycles. The tire pressure labels may not remain affixed to the motorcycle frame. As a result, these motorcycles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 120, “Wheels and Rims-Other Than Passenger Cars.”

 

Remedy

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the tire pressure label, free of charge. The recall began October 19, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

The affected vehicles have been marked with campaign number 0000710800.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this campaign it will be necessary to verify the vehicle VIN in AIR (Aftersales Information Research). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the repair or take no further action. Please note, open campaigns or vehicle stops may not appear in DCS Warranty Vehicle Inquiry or sales systems until 24-72 hours after they are announced, therefore AIR is always the recommended method for determining open campaigns and vehicle stops.

 

SITUATION

The VIN, Noise Emission and Tire Pressure labels may not be correctly bonded to the frame and could become partially loose or lift. The legally required durability and legibility of the labels can therefore not be ensured for the service life of the vehicle.

Customers will be notified by BMW Motorrad USA via First Class mail advising them of this recall.

Customers will be asked to schedule an appointment with an authorized BMW Motorrad dealer to have the inspection performed. In the case of vehicles that have not yet been delivered, the Technical Campaign must be carried out before delivery to the customers. Vehicles have been marked with a delivery stop.

 

CORRECTION

The VIN Label, Noise Emission Label and Tire Pressure label must be replaced.

 

PROCEDURE

In order to ensure the correct bond, the newly glued labels must be pressed onto the frame in a form-fitting manner for at least 4 hours. Please carefully follow the included repair instructions “00 60 345 Replace signs”.

For vehicles in your inventory: Labels for vehicles in your inventory are being mailed directly to your dealership via FedEx with a copy of this bulletin and repair instructions.

For vehicles in service: Labels for vehicles that are in service (retailed) will not be provided directly to your dealership and must be ordered by the dealer performing the repair. The selling dealer will be notified of these VIN’s by email. In a small amount of cases, the servicing dealer may be different, therefore please do not order labels unless you have confirmed with the customer your dealership will repair the vehicle. These labels are printed on demand in Berlin so please plan the customer appointment accordingly. When ordering replacement labels, reference campaign 00 00 71 08 00.

This means that dealers may not legally deliver new motorcycles to consumers until they are fixed or use/sell replacement equipment/parts subject to this recall. Note also that substantial civil penalties apply to violations of the Safety Act. Also, you should not sell, lease or deliver any Certified Pre-Owned or used motorcycles subject to a safety recall until the repair is completed. Please follow any special instructions that we provide to you for the return or disposition of recall parts.

Remove type plate / signs

Prerequisite

Instruction applies analogously to type plate and signs

• Pull off sign starting at one  corner.

– If the building space allows it to heat the sign, do not overheat other components!

• Remove remnants of the old sign completely.

– Use plastic tools to prevent paint damage

Clean bonding surface for sign.

• Remove remnants of the old sign completely.
• Roughen bonding surface with abrasive fleece.

– microfine/grain 1000

• Clean bonding surface with isopropanol observing a sufficient air drying time of at least 1 minute.

 

Cleaner
Solvent cleaner R2, Cleaning agent and installation aids containing isopropanol	83 19 0 417 324

Bond sign

• Prepare hose section, which serves for later attachment of the sign.

– Clear compressed air fabric hose, 16 mm inner / 24 mm outer diameter.

– Length approx. 8 cm, analogue to longest sign.

• Pull off backing film.
• Align sign on frame tube and glue on.

– Positioning analogue to the old sign.

• Glue on sign completely, slide air bubbles out to the edge.

 

• Fix sign (arrow) with the hose section (1).

– Leave hose section fixed on the frame for at least 4 hours, then remove.

Final check of work performed

• Check the following:

– The work as performed achieved the intended purpose.

– All reservoirs and containers have been filled and all fluids and lubricants are at their correct levels.

– All threaded fasteners released beforehand have been cor-rectly retightened.

– The fuel system is free of leaks.

– The lights and signalling equipment are fully operational and the vehicle is roadworthy.

– The brake pads of the front and rear brakes are bedded against the brake discs.

 

 

Function test, engine start suppression

Check

• Set kill switch to centred position.
• Select neutral.
• Switch on the ignition.

» Neutral telltale light “N” lights up.

• Select a gear.

» Neutral indicator light “N” goes out.

• Press the starter button.

» Starter does not operate.

• Extend the side stand.
• Pull the clutch lever.
• Press the starter button.

» Starter does not operate.

• Retract the side stand.
• Press the starter button without releasing the clutch lever.

» Starter operates.

 

Result

Not all test steps completed succesfully.

 

Measure

• Check the appropriate parts with the BMW Motorrad diagnostic system.

BMW AG has decided that certain Model Year 2021 BMW R1250 motorcycle models fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) Number 120 (Wheels and rims – other than passenger cars).  Our records indicate that you are the owner of a potentially affected motorcycle.

 

Why are we contacting you?

We are pleased to inform you that we are ready to perform this recall. Please contact your authorized BMW Motorcycle dealer immediately to schedule an appointment to have this important free repair performed as soon as possible. To locate your nearest BMW Motorcycle dealer, visit www.bmwmotorcycles.com/dealer. If you are not the only rider of this motorcycle, please advise all other riders of this important information.

 

What could happen?

The tire information label may start to detach from the frame. When adding tire pressure, if the label is not present, and if the Owner’s Manual was not reviewed, the proper tire pressure may not be added which, in a rare case, could increase the risk of a crash.

 

What will BMW do?

The tire information label will be replaced for free and should take less than one hour.

If you changed your address or sold the motorcycle, please let us know by contacting BMW Customer Relations (see left side of page for contact info).  If you are a motorcycle lessor, Federal Regulations require you to forward this notice to your lessee within ten days.
