August 13, 2020 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 20V476000
Front Brake Calipers May Leak/FMVSS 122
Overtime, a leaking front brake caliper can reduce the amount of brake fluid in the reservoir. Low volume could affect brake performance, increasing the risk of crash.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V476
Manufacturer BMW of North America, LLC
Components SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC, SERVICE BRAKES
Potential Number of Units Affected 9,392
Summary
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW
) is recalling certain 2019-2020 R 1250 GS, GS Adventure and R 1250 RT, 2020 S 1000 RR and S 1000 XR motorcycles. The front brake calipers may leak brake fluid when parked. As such, these motorcycles fail to comply with the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 122, “Motorcycle Brake Systems.”
Remedy
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and if necessary, replace the front brake calipers with an improved version, free of charge. BMW
issued owners an interim notification on October 12, 2020. As of January 19, 2021, a remedy was still not available. The recall began March 8, 2021. Owners may contact BMW
customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Front Brake Caliper
BMW Motorrad is announcing a recall and stop sale for the K50, K51, K52, K67 and K69. The recall is related to a potential leak of the front brake calipers in vehicles produced from 8/27/2018 up to 2/28/2020. A process is currently being developed to inspect the affected vehicles and repair if necessary. The affected VIN’s have been marked with a stop sale flag “STOP340006”. Bikes in dealer inventory with this stop flag cannot be sold until further notice. More information will be communicated through Dealer Direct as it becomes available.
NHTSA Statement
Please be reminded that it is a violation of federal law (The Safety Act) for you to sell, lease or deliver any new motor vehicle covered by this notification until the recall repair has been performed. This means that dealers may not legally deliver new motor vehicles to consumers until they are fixed or use/sell replacement equipment/parts subject to this recall. Note also that substantial civil penalties apply to violations of the Safety Act.
Also, you should not sell, lease or deliver any used vehicles in your inventory subject to a safety recall until the repair is completed.

Front Brake Calipers
(Rev.1)
November 5, 2020
In 2019, BMW became aware of reports alleging fluid leaks of the front brake calipers. BMW
conducted an engineering review. Because the issue did not affect brake performance, a qualityrelated product improvement program was implemented involving a number of production changes to the front brake calipers.
On February 18, 2020, NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) contacted BMW regarding complaints the agency received alleging front brake caliper leaks involving BMW
R1250 motorcycles. BMW
requested a meeting with NHTSA to discuss the issue which would include engineering and technical development efforts. NHTSA also indicated that they intended to open a Preliminary Evaluation (PE) to explore this issue.
On April 1, 2020, NHTSA published the PE Opening Resume and, on April 7, 2020, NHTSA sent BMW the PE’s Information Request (IR) letter.
Between April and June, BMW collected information and prepared a response to NHTSA’s IR. On May 29PthP, and on June 29PthP, BMW
provided its response to the agency. BMW
’s response stated that the issue that is the subject of the IR does not pose an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety.
In brief, the extensive testing and analyses conducted by BMW showed that the weeping effect occurs when the motorcycle is parked, and is due to a small incompatibility between the seal groove of the brake caliper and the inner seal due to the surface roughness of these components. It is a low-pressure condition that does not occur with brake actuation (pressure applied to the inner seal, piston, and seal groove) because the fluid loss (leak) path is closed. It will also not cause a spontaneous and unexpected loss of brake pressure while riding when the front brakes are actuated.
BMW also conducted FMVSS 122 dynamic (riding) tests with early-generation suspect “leaky” calipers. These tests involved varying levels of brake fluid in the brake fluid reservoir, and in some cases with only the front brakes actuated. The tests showed that there was no material effect upon FMVSS 122 dynamic (riding) brake performance. In all cases, the stopping distances were well within the FMVSS 122 performance requirements. In these tests, there was no observable brake fluid leaking during and after completion of all tests.
In addition, an “extreme” test (front brake calipers soaked in brake fluid) was conducted; both the vehicle acceleration, and the brake lever hand force, results were well within the FMVSS 122 requirements.
On July 28, 2020, NHTSA’s Office of Vehicle Safety Compliance (OVSC) contacted BMW to discuss the issue. OVSC indicated, after a review of the field data submitted in the PE response, the subject motorcycles may not fully conform to FMVSS 122 Section 5.2.3, specifically after completion of a compliance test, a front brake caliper may start to leak.
After the discussion with NHTSA’s OVSC, BMW conducted further reviews and analyses to understand the basis for NHTSA’s position.
On August 6, 2020, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary non-compliance recall.
BMW has not received any reports, nor is BMW
otherwise aware, of any accident or injuries associated with this issue.
In late September, BMW became aware of a Model Year 2020 R 1250 RT motorcycle in which the front brake calipers exhibited signs of leaking. In October, BMW
and NHTSA discussed this case and, on October 21, 2020, BMW
performed an inspection of the motorcycle in which NHTSA observed.
In addition, warranty claims were reviewed for motorcycles produced after March 1, 2020 in which claims were processed for front brake calipers that exhibited signs of leaking.
After further reviews and analyses, it appeared that the current version of the front brake calipers could start to exhibit leaks.
On October 29, 2020, BMW decided to include these additional potentially affected motorcycles in the recall and, to reexamine and revise the remedy for motorcycles identified and included in BMW
’s August 13, 2020 filing.

IMPORTANT NON-COMPLIANCE RECALL
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. BMW AG has decided
that certain Model Year 2019-2021 BMW R1250 and Model Year 2020-2021 BMW
S 1000 RR/XR motorcycle models
fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) Number 122 (Motorcycle brake systems). Our
records indicate that you are the owner of a potentially affected motorcycle.
Why are we contacting you?
We are informing you of this Non-Compliance Recall on your motorcycle although we are not able to perform the remedy
at this time. We will notify you with a follow-up letter as soon as the remedy is available. If you are not the only rider
of this motorcycle, please advise all other riders of this important information.
What could happen?
The front brake caliper(s) may start to show signs of weeping or “sweating” of brake fluid. This is a low-pressure
condition that does not occur when braking and will not cause a spontaneous or unexpected loss of brake pressure.
Although analyses show that this does not affect brake performance, it is considered a non-compliance with a Federal
regulation.
If you notice a small brake fluid stain on the front brake caliper(s), or on the front rim, tire, or ground, your
motorcycle may be experiencing this issue. Please contact an authorized BMW Motorcycle dealer to schedule an
appointment. As noted in the Rider’s Manual, please check the brake system during a pre-ride inspection. Over a long
period of time, this can also be detected via the brake fluid reservoir “window” mounted on the handlebars.
What will BMW do?
When the remedy is available, the front brake calipers will be inspected and, if necessary, replaced for free and should
take about one hour.
What if I am not the current owner of this motorcycle?
If you changed your address or sold the motorcycle, please let us know by contacting BMW Customer Relations (see
left side of page for contact info). If you are a motorcycle lessor, Federal Regulations require you to forward this
notice to your lessee within ten days.
What if I have additional questions?
For the latest updates to this recall, please visit www.bmwmotorcycles.com/recall. Should you have any questions
about this recall, please contact your authorized BMW Motorcycle dealer. If you need additional assistance, please
contact BMW Customer Relations.
If your BMW Motorcycle dealer is unable to remedy the defect without charge or within a reasonable period of time, you
may notify the Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1200 New Jersey Ave., S.E., Washington,
DC 20590, call the toll-free Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY: 1-800-424-9153), or go to
