BMW of North America, LLC (BMW
) is recalling certain 2019-2022 BMW
X7 xDrive40i, X7 Drive50i, X7 M50i vehicles with third-row seats. One or more of the compression springs that lock the backrest may not have been installed properly, and could dislodge or detach.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect the third-row seat and, if necessary, remove and reinstall improperly installed compression springs, and reinstall any missing springs, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 4, 2022. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
Check the 4 compression springs on the backrest frame of the third-row seats and rework if necessary.
Vehicles which require this Recall Campaign to be completed will show it as “Open” when checked either in AIR, the “Service Menu” of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System), ISPA Next or Warranty Vehicle Inquiry.
SITUATION
BMW AG is conducting a Voluntary Safety Recall (effective September 7, 2022) on certain Model Year 2019 – 2022 BMW
X7 SAV vehicles that were produced between January 4, 2019, and February 3, 2022.
The third-row seat may not have been produced to specifications by the supplier. In a crash, the seat may not be fully locked, which could increase the risk of injury. The seat will be inspected and, if necessary, parts will be replaced.
The Recall Notice and Q&A have been attached for further information.
CAUSE
Compression springs that are required for the electric fold function may not be installed correctly or may be missing altogether.
An improperly positioned or missing compression spring prevents the seat backrest from locking completely.
CORRECTION
Check the 4 compression springs on the backrest frame of the third-row seats and rework if necessary.
PROCEDURE
Remove the luggage compartment floor covering according to Repair Instructions 51 47 101
Remove 2 plastic covers.
Remove 2 T40 head bolts.
Lift out luggage compartment floor.
Release the 4 mounting clips from the luggage compartment well trim.
Press down on the luggage compartment well trim for a better view of the 4 locking elements.
There are 2 springs per seat installed, Underneath the inboard (IB) and outboard (OB) pivot points
You can feel the springs easier than you can see them. Here we are pointing at the Left Hand Inboard (LH IB) compression spring.

Check that the 4 compression springs are correctly installed.
If any of the springs are missing, submit an INFO ONLY TSARA case letting us know how many spring(s) you will need and pictures of the missing spring location.
These springs are not in ETK and can only be ordered via an INFO ONLY TSARA case.
To install the spring(s) it may be necessary to remove the third-row seat for proper access.

Chronology :
On February 15, 2022, BMW became aware of a third-row seat that may not have been produced by the supplier according to specifications. The supplier noticed that, during the preparation of the seat for shipping, a compression spring was not present. A review of supplier production records was initiated.
During March, the supplier production records review consisted of an analysis of images captured during the seat assembly process, and also records containing electrical measurements in which seat folding and unfolding was recorded during End-of-Line (EoL) testing. These recorded electrical measurements were analyzed in an attempt to identify potentially affected vehicles, but the recorded data alone was not sufficient.
In April, a field inspection program in certain European markets was initiated to supplement the supplier records analysis. Available third-row seats were manually checked for the presence and proper installation of both compression springs. It was found that a number of seats did not have the proper configuration regarding compression springs.
In July, further analyses compared the results of the field inspections to the supplier production records, and it indicated that a more robust analysis was needed to identify potentially affected seats. As a result, statistical methods were applied to the EoL measurements and thresholds, which were used to identify a more comprehensive selection of potentially affected seats.
Vehicle assembly information and supplier production and process records were reviewed to determine the number, and production dates, of potentially affected vehicles.
On August 31, 2022, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall.
BMW has not received any reports, nor is BMW
otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries related to this issue.

The supplier noticed that, during the preparation of the seat for shipping, a compression spring was not present. A review of supplier production records was initiated. During March, the supplier production records review consisted of an analysis of images captured during the seat assembly process, and also records containing electrical measurements in which seat folding and unfolding was recorded during End-of-Line (EoL) testing. These recorded electrical measurements were analyzed in an attempt to identify potentially affected vehicles, but the recorded data alone was not sufficient. In April, a field inspection program in certain European markets was initiated to supplement the supplier records analysis. Available third-row seats were manually checked for the presence and proper installation of both compression springs. It was found that a number of seats did not have the proper configuration regarding compression springs. In July, further analyses compared the results of the field inspections to the supplier production records, and it indicated that a more robust analysis was needed to identify potentially affected seats. On August 31, 2022, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall. BMW has not received any reports, nor is BMW otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries related to this issue. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : The third-row seat will be inspected and, if necessary, improperly installed compression springs will be removed and properly reinstalled, and/or missing compression springs will be installed.
