Summary

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 528i, 528i xDrive, 535i, 535i xDrive, 550i, 550i xDrive, and M5 vehicles, 2013 ActiveHybrid 5 vehicles and 2014 525d xDrive vehicles.

The rear reflex reflectors may not reflect enough light. As such, the vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, “Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.”

 

Remedy

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rear reflex reflectors, free of charge.

The recall began July 28, 2017.

Please perform the procedure outlined in this Service Information on all affected vehicles before customer delivery. In the event the customer has already taken delivery of the vehicle, please perform the procedure the next time the vehicle is in the shop.

This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI B63 07 17 dated May 2017.

MODEL  SITUATION  AFFECTED VEHICLES

F10 (5 Series)

Rear Reflectors with a lower than acceptable reflection value were installed in rear bumpers.

BMW AG is conducting a Voluntary Non-Compliance Recall (effective May 31, 2017) on Model Year 2013 BMW 5 Series (including ActiveHybrid 5) involving the rear reflectors.

Approximately 13,531 vehicles are affected by this recall.

Final notification letters were mailed on July 27, 2017 to inform customers that their vehicle is affected by this recall and that parts are available.

Note: Vehicles in dealer inventory may be affected by this recall/stop. Vehicles which are affected will

show the campaign as “Open” when checked either in Warranty Vehicle Inquiry, AIR or ISPA Next. The affected vehicles will be identified with the campaign description: B630717 Recall: F10 Both Rear Reflectors

 

CORRECTION  PROCEDURE

Replace the rear reflectors on both sides of the rear bumper.

Follow ISTA repair instruction REP 63 14 120 Removing and installing or replacing rear reflector Repeat the same procedure for the other side.

TREAD Act – Previous Customer-Pay Repairs

Reimbursement requests for prior customer-pay repairs that specifically address the issue described in this Recall bulletin are not very likely, since a previous replacement would be for reasons other than for the incorrect reflection value of the rear reflectors.

To:  All Center Operators, Sales Managers, Service Manager, Parts Manager and Warranty Processor

RE: Recall 15V-188: Replace Both Rear Reflectors  B63 07 17

 

BMW AG is conducting a Voluntary Non-Compliance Recall (effective May 31, 2017) on Model Year 2013 – 2014 BMW 5 Series (including the M5 and ActiveHybrid 5) involving the rear reflectors.

Owners will be notified by First Class mail about the Recall and will be instructed to bring their vehicles in for a free repair when parts are available.

 

Please be reminded that it is a violation of federal law (The Safety Act) for you to sell, lease or deliver any new motor vehicle covered by this notification until the recall repair has been performed.  This means that centers may not legally deliver new motor vehicles to consumers until they are fixed or use/sell replacement equipment/parts subject to this recall.  Note also that substantial civil penalties apply to violations of the Safety Act. 

 

Also, you should not sell, lease or deliver any Certified Pre-Owned or used vehicles subject to a safety recall until the repair is completed. 

 

Please follow any special instructions that we provide to you for the return or disposition of recall parts.

The rear reflectors will be replaced.

 

Q9. Is BMW Group aware of any accidents, injuries, or fires involving these BMW Group vehicles associated with this Non-Compliance Recall?

No.

You will receive a letter in July via First Class advising you of this recall.  You will receive another letter when the recall is ready to be performed.  At that time, you should immediately schedule an appointment with an authorized BMW center to have this recall performed.  You can locate your nearest authorized BMW center at www.bmwusa.com/dealers.
