Passenger Air Bag May Not Deploy Properly

In the event of a crash, if the front passenger air bag does not deploy properly, it can increase the risk of injury.

 

Summary

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2016-2017 X1 xDrive28i and X1 sDrive28i vehicles.

The affected vehicles have an instrument panel that may not allow the front passenger air bag to deploy properly in the event of a crash.

 

Remedy

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the instrument panel, free of charge.

The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule.

RECALL CAMPAIGN 17V-062: REPLACE INSTRUMENT PANEL

Please perform the procedure outlined in this Service Information on all affected vehicles before customer delivery. In the event the customer has already taken delivery of the vehicle, please perform the procedure the next time the vehicle is in the shop.

SITUATION

A recess on the inside of the instrument panel was possibly not machined correctly.

The recess is used as the predetermined breaking point of the instrument panel when the front passenger airbag is activated.

If this recess has not been machined accurately, the correct opening of the front passenger airbag cannot be guaranteed.

 

AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Recall Campaign involves (4) F48 produced between June 16, 2016 and November 24, 2016.

Vehicles which require this Recall Campaign to be completed will show it as “Open” when checked either in AIR, the “Service Menu” of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or with the Key Reader.

 

CAUSE

Possible manufacturing process omission.

 

CORRECTION

Replace instrument panel

 

PROCEDURE

For affected vehicles, complete the repair instructions RA 51 45 030 Replacing the instrument panel trim.

SAFETY RECALL NOTICE

 

To:  All Center Operators, Sales Managers, Service Manager, Parts Manager and Warranty Processor

RE:  Recall 17V-XXX:  Replace Instrument Panel B51 01 17

 

BMW Group is conducting a Voluntary Safety Recall (effective January 26, 2017) involving the instrument panel in certain BMW X1 SAVs.

Please note that all affected vehicles are at authorized BMW centers.

Please be reminded that it is a violation of federal law (The Safety Act) for you to sell, lease or deliver any new motor vehicle covered by this notification until the recall repair has been performed.  This means that centers may not legally deliver new motor vehicles to consumers until they are fixed or use/sell replacement equipment/parts subject to this recall.  Note also that substantial civil penalties apply to violations of the Safety Act. 

 

Also, you should not sell, lease or deliver any Certified Pre-Owned or used vehicles subject to a safety recall until the repair is completed. 

 

Please follow any special instructions that we provide to you for the return or disposition of recall parts.

Note:  No customer vehicles are affected.  All potentially affected vehicles were stopped, and are being repaired at authorized BMW centers.

Q2. What is the specific issue?

This safety recall involves the instrument panel which was not produced to specifications by the supplier.  If an accident were to occur in which deployment of the passenger front air bag was necessary, then air bag deployment may be impaired.

 

Q3. What can happen as a result of this issue?

If deployment of the passenger front air bag was impaired, then insufficient restraint could be provided to the front passenger, increasing the risk of injury.

 

Q4. How did BMW Group become aware of this issue?

BMW Group became aware of this issue through its quality control procedures.

Other vehicles were manufactured with instrument panels produced to specifications by the supplier.
