BMW of North America, LLC
P.O. Box 1227
Westwood, NJ 07675-1227

Recall Campaign No. 19V-692:  Transmission

November 2019

Dear BMW Owner / Lessee:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.  BMW AG has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain Model Year 2017 – 2020 BMW K 1600 B / GT / GTL motorcycles.  Our records indicate that you are the owner of a potentially affected motorcycle.

Why are we contacting you?

We want to make you aware of this important Safety Recall even though parts are not currently available.   We will notify you with a follow-up letter as soon as parts become available.

What could happen?

Certain internal transmission parts may not have been manufactured to sufficient specifications. This could lead to a double-engagement of gears and/or internal damage.  If this happens, a blocked rear wheel could occur which would affect handling and control, and increase the risk of a crash.

If you believe you experienced this issue, please contact BMW Motorcycle Roadside Assistance at 1-877-680-2176 to have your motorcycle brought to the nearest authorized Motorcycle dealer.

If you are not the only rider of this motorcycle, please advise all other riders of this important information.

What will BMW do?

When parts become available, the shift forks, selector sleeve (5th/6th gear), and gear wheel (6th gear), will be replaced at no charge, and will take approximately five hours.  If you already had this repair performed at your own expense, our follow-up letter will contain information regarding possible eligibility for reimbursement.

What if the current motorcycle ownership information is incorrect?

You can update motorcycle ownership and contact information by completing the enclosed postage-paid card.  If you are a motorcycle lessor, Federal Regulations require you to forward this notice to your lessee within ten days.

What if you have questions or experience problems?

For the latest updates to this recall, please visit www.bmwmotorcycles.com/recall.  Should you have any questions about this recall, please contact your authorized BMW motorcycle dealer.  If you need additional assistance, contact BMW Customer Relations and Services at 1-800-525-7417 or at CustomerRelations@bmwmotorcycles.com.

If your BMW motorcycle dealer is unable to remedy the defect without charge or within a reasonable period of time, you may notify the Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1200 New Jersey Ave., S.E., Washington, DC 20590, call the toll-free Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY: 1-800424-9153), or go to https://www.safercar.gov.

IMPORTANTE RETIRADA POR MOTIVOS DE SEGURIDAD

Repuesto no disponible

Atentamente,

Important Changes for Recall 19V-692 (K1600; K48/K61) March 5th, 2020

BMW Motorrad is please to announce three important and positive changes for recall 19V-692. To support our dealers in performing recall 19V-692 the following changes are being implemented effective immediately:

  1. Until further notice, BMW Motorrad will be adding an adjustment of +18 FRU to the original repair time to assist with the learning curve of the complexity of the repair. A dedicated technician and work-bay for this repair is recommend when possible. Dealers should take full advantage of this addition time and complete as many repairs as possible, submitting warranty claims promptly after completing the repair.

An updated bulletin will be issued next week with new warranty claim information; however, dealers can continue to complete repairs, as all completed repairs will be paid the +18 FRU retroactively. Do not submit a claim for the additional time at this point. BMW will issue a credit for claims processed starting next week. The credit will be shown on a later separate claim.

  1. Dealer will receive reimbursement for the VOR fee charged for the initial recall parts shipments. The $50 fee will be automatically added to the warranty claim. Do not submit a claim with the $50. If the claim for one of these eligible VIN’s has already been processed/credited, the credit will be on a later separate claim along with the FRU adjustment described above.

The $50 will only be paid on the VIN’S that received the kit as per the VIN that was listed in the PO number of the order. This $50 fee only applies to kits that were sent out by BMW of North America. Any kit that was ordered VOR by dealers after this point are not eligible for reimbursement.

Dealers can submit a warranty IDS ticket if they would like more information on the credit note or either of the credits.

  1. Effective immediately, BMW Motorrad will also allow up to a $100 charge per VIN to pick up and return the bike from/to the customer ($50 each way) using sublet code 05. This will also be detailed in the revised bulletin next week. The pickup or drop off must be documented and signed for by the customer.

With the additions of these benefits, our collective goal is to complete as many repairs as possible before the riding season gets into full swing through comprehensive support. Please make sure to take advantage of the positive adjustments and submit your claims immediately after repair completion.  Full details will be communicated next week via a revised Service Bulletin and through Dealer Direct.

Parts Update for Recall 19V-692: K48/K61 (K 1600 B, GT, GTL)

As parts continue to arrive at a steady pace effective Monday March 2, 2020 dealers may now order kits for urgent cases (ex. customer escalation, sold unit) through the regular DMS/DCS ordering processes under part number 81925A1BB87 (defect code 0000232300).  Orders can be placed via regular stock order or VOR. Please note that VOR orders will take priority but the VOR fee will not be reimbursed. If you require parts for a bike that requires repairs under defect code 00002324000 please continue to place IDS tickets as previously instructed.

All IDS tickets received until this point will be processed and do not need to be reordered.

Please note: The PO number of each order must reflect the VIN it will be used for.

Orders that are for a quantity of more than 1 and which do not have a valid VIN as the PO number may be canceled. This process will remain in place until enough inventory arrives for parts to be opened up for standard dealer ordering.

Recall Update February 7th

Recall 19V-692: K48/K61 (K 1600 B, GT, GTL):

The tools required for this recall campaign have been shipped to all dealers as of last week.

To simplify the distribution of the multiple parts required, the RDC is consolidating the components into kits. Kits are now shipping from the warehouse daily.

Dealers should continue to request kits for urgent cases by submitting an IDS ticket to

Parts Logistics US -> Parts Consultant Group -> Motorrad Group Only Answered Inquiries with part number 81925A1BB87. All request for urgent cases must include a valid VIN number and short summary (customer bike, sold unit, etc.).  Please do not place orders for the kit at this time as this will delay the allocation process.  This process will remain in place until sufficient inventory arrives for parts to be opened up for standard dealer ordering.

Repair Tips:

  1. When looking up repair instructions for the removal and installation of the transmission in AIR please make sure to enter the VIN of the vehicle. This ensures the correct instructions are displayed (with or without reverser).
  2. For vehicles with reverser, two additional tools are needed. These tools were required tools for the K48/K61 and should be at your dealership. [Tool 23 0 817 (SI 06 001 14) part number 83 30 2 353 303, Tool 23 0 840 (SI 06 001 18) part number 83 30 2 450 826].Tool 23 0 840 was auto shipped in October 2018. Please order these tools if you do not have them.

Important Reminder: Parts for all recalls should be utilized to meet customer repair demands before any inventory unit is repaired.

Recall Update January 2020

Please see the below update regarding the latest status and actions being completed for the various recalls:

Recall 19V-692: K48/K61 (K 1600 B, GT, GTL): Service bulletin 23-01-19 “Recall 19V692” was published in TIS 2.0 December with full instruction on the repair. In addition, BMW produced a video tutorial which is now available in TSMI under course code

“MR19V-692”. The video is meant to be used in conjunction with the repair instructions. BMW requires all technician performing the recall repair to review the video. TMSI will track each technician through training credits. The video is also available in TIS 2.0 for reference.

A limited amount of parts will be available CW3. As parts stock will be limited for the first few months, we will be allocating parts for urgent requests only. Urgent requests are defined as a customer bike down, an escalated consumer complaint or a sold unit that is waiting delivery. All request must be made through an IDS ticket with a valid VIN number.

Please note that due to the number of parts required to complete the repair, RDCs will be boxing all required components into one KIT.   Dealers will receive one box under one part number per VIN.  The special tools required will be auto-shipped as well except for “0490482 Extractor” which should be purchased from your local supplier. All dealers should receive all tools by CW4.

Once enough inventory is available, parts will be released on a fair share basis for instock units.

If you have any questions or concerns about the availability or distribution plan for these recall parts, please contact your Area Manager.
